Hi I am wondering if it is possible for me to put a waypoint for my intended route and use my Hydrovane to steer using a xte alarm to tell me when local wind changes are happening? Thank you in advance. Mike

An interesting question.

You know that your Hydrovane - a cracking bit of kit - sails to a wind angle, you will need to monitor the cross track error on the GPS unless you can come up with a Heath Robinson method of adjusting the Hydrovane to steer a course, not the wind.

I have went through the help files and looked at my Garmin Boating App on my iPad and I can't see any alarm options for XTE or even a description of any alarms. The only way to test is to set a rout, start sailing it, and then deliberately go off course and see what happens. Nothing I suspect.

Isn't change of wind direction one of the bugs of Windvanes ? I can apprecaite your wish to have warning so you can alter windvane angle to resume course ...

On some plotters - you can set a max figure for XTE and have alarm if it hits max or exceeds .. no idea if Garmin boating can do that. Basically its a figure displayed for info and if Autohelm connected - to adjust rudder as you already know.
