XP SP2 and digital photos

Just had the SP2 upgrade. Previously when I went to My Pictures and clicked on a picture in brought the picture up in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. This was excellent, the pic appeared just as it should as a sharp image. Now it brings the pic up in Microsoft Photo Editor and the image is not sharp at all---unless I run slide show. Any ideas---esp how I can get Picture and Fax Viewer back !

right click and go to properties and were it says "open with" put the program you want to use in there.

Sorrry. cant help with this particular problem.
However, I am getting loads of feedback from various associates who all say dont move to XP SP2 yet...loads of things need sorting out and far from being 'just an upgrade' all sorts of things have changed.

Its quite possible that Picture and Fax viewer was processing your images before display for better screen presentation whereas Photo Editor is showing you them 'as shot' warts and all. Its also possible that in SP2 Photo Editor is the default program to open jpg files....if this is the case see if Picture and Fax Viewer is still available and read the help files to see how to change so that this is the default jpg file viewer.

Good idea but quite likely you will find Fax and Picture Viewer is no longer a choice if it has been superceded by Photo Editor in XP SP2.

Also, when in the Open with...dialogue box select the choose program option and then select the program you want from the list...but also tick the 'Always use the selected programme to open this kind of file' box. That way it will become the default for opening that type of file.

Digital quality loss

While we are on digital photographs, the pictures I get from my camera or scanner are of excellent quality when viewed full size - which is really quite big, but if I reduce them for DTP work etc, the image quality drops off rapidly (I have tried a variety of image-handling packages) Does anyone know how to reduce picture size without loss of image definition?

Trick is to increase the DPI (dots per inch) rather than change the resolution. If you do the later the image is generally resampled and dots (pixels) get lost. If you do the former it squeezes the dots into a smaller space. For DTP work you should aim for 300dpi (or greater if you have a decent printer). Stuff for display on screen or the web etc is usually 72dpi.

Depends on the image editor you are using but Photoshop etc allows you to change the DPI independantly from the resolution.
