Depending on what sailing you do, it's usually worth getting the best you can afford, I agree. You can't generalise though; sometimes a small difference, such as the angle of the neck, or the wrist seal will tip the balance in favour of one or another. I've used Musto Offshore for six years which is about 15,000 miles and they look good for many more.

Well there are always some who will say that "you should buy the most expensive you can afford". Personally I think that is far from always being the case, and the XM Ocean are an example of this. Having had both I can say that there is no difference really between Musto & XM except the Musto inflated price (it costs a lot to sponsor Ellen). I prefer my XM to the Musto because of the Harness Tunnel which I think Musto & HL no longer do.

Some years ago I had some HL coastal and thought they were quite rubbish really. Anyway Musto & HL obviously don't have to worry about quality, as long as they are ridiculously expensive, some people will insist they are the best!

mmm I have to agree with you, as I have already said, the material used to make our XM oilies was the same as the Musto set, at the time. I cant see that DuPont (or whoever it was) would allow their swing tag to be used on a product that was inferior.

Top tips.
This may be useful for anyone visiting France or Spain. There is a big chain of Spotswear stores in these countries called Decathalon, flogging all sorts of stuff from sea canoes to ballet shoes. All the sailing swag is marketed under the name Tribord. A good suit of typical offshore jacket and salopettes was around 115 euros 2 years ago, can't imagine the price has skyrocketed since. It really is good stuff at such a low price, just as good as a lot of the named UK gear.

I will second this statement bought century coastals but emerged from them wringing wet even on dry days. replaced mine with gill key west, then on offer from mailspeed marine. definatly worth paying the extra, however i have no experience of the Lidl ones but have not been disapointed with other Lidl specials.

I have a set of "Century" oilies that were extremely cheap (£70 for tops&bots as I recall) about 2 years ago and they still seem to work OK. I think they were from a non-nautical firm that was consolidating its stock lines. They have the most comprehensive arrangement of zips and attachments I've ever seen and am still getting to grips with what they're for! Very cosy.

I have no problem but SWMBO does everthing on sheer courage. This includes skiing (she is afraid of heights!) and sailing (she hates the boat leaning). OK in the dinghy when she is helming in a race as she controls the main and keeps the boat flatish! I think feeling in control is a factor.

I admire people who do things when they are frightened as its easy for people like me that are not concerned.

SWMBO is currently thinking of doing a weekend course where you walk on burning coals etc. Course is marketed for people who are frightened of different experiences. If it works I will report on here otherwise it may be trying some hypnotherapy!! After that intend to try an advanced skiing course in November on a Glacier.

You only have one go at this life and I seemed to have missed the 1st half of mine!!

Hello

Had a set of XM's for a few years but found that they were fine in summer but a bit light for the other 11 months of the year. Also the waterproofing wasn't up to much.
So got a new set after a few years and spent £500 on Musto, great in the cold and wet which is most of the time and supremely comfortable.
Will definately buy another set in a few years time, they fit very well and being of heavier fabric tend not to puff the warm air out of the suite keeping you a little warmer.
Bought the Mrs a Musto jacket before christmas and now she is sold on the idea of expensive oilies.... what have I started!
I think it was summed up well in PBO a few months ago, minimum boat, maximum oilies.
In the Uk we're rarely lucky enough to be too warm.

Well, I post something before I go to bed, and come back home after a long day at the office (TFJ doesn't believe I have a real job), and what do I see but 30 odd replies. I think I meant 'ish replies but that reads rather better.

From buy a bin liner, because its as good, to spend the equivalent of the national debt. A spread as wide as the viewers personal tastes, and no Terry, I do not want to snuggle into your oilies, even if you lent me your bed in the deep and cold depths of last April.

There talk your way out of that - I have no shame.

Thank you all very much for the assembled wisdom. I too have a set of Century which will do for visitors who I don't particularly care for, but do not want to have as my own comfort blanket.
I thank Bav34 for his link, I had already sussed them out but they seem to be the cheapest, and as Terry knows, I am nothing if not cheap.

Our trip is in June, and I think XM will get the family fortune. Although I have a Musto riding jacket which is really good and has lasted forever, I think their prices are really too much for a humble wage slave - as you lot pay my wages, thank you very much, and it will please you to know that economy is king where I am concerned, although if you paid a bit more I might go with quality is king.
