XM Antifoul, Gaelforce antifoul ...any other antifoul?

One thing I have noticed - I bought the dark (navy)blue colour, but it soon turns light (air force!)blue after immersion in salt water - I'd rather use paint that stays the same colour!

That would prove difficult to find, as most antifoulings change colour on immersion, Grab a copy of the International Antifoulings Colour Card and take a peek; they have two colours listed for every antifoul, one with a white circle (Pre-immersion colour) and one with a black circle (Post-immersion colour) in the bottom left hand corner.

None of the changes listed on their colour card look as severe as what you experienced with the XM though!

Mmm. Was thinking of using Jotun this year, but any advice which one? I see they have the seaforce range, then also the racing and nonstop ranges listed in their "yachting" section. Are the latter more expensive? Can't see them on the sml website? Any advice based on experience?

Big thumbs up for Jotun "Yachting NonStop" from me. Last year I used Intl's Micron. Which is good (except for the green copper staining on the waterline) but Jotun Nonstop was better. I was amazed by how easily the slime washed off

I'm on a swinging mooring at Granton which doesn't dry and use Cruiser Uno. 3 litres does my 10m fin yacht perfectly and appears to keep the growth down to a minimum. Things will vary year to year, as last year many in my club were saying they had more growth then usual.

Jotun in fancy new design tins at much higher prices - more like International and so on.
No explanation of the ranking order of SeaForce, SeaQueen, Mare Nostrum and Non Stop - but I've put them in price order.
Wonder if the cheaper stuff is about to disappear?

I had XM on for 2 years on my boat on the Tyne and there was just a slight sliming on the water line. I have used it again.

One thing I did wonder - can you add your own copper and if so how much ?

you certainly can, west system ell pots of copper oxide.

takes a lot of stirring in and truely works.

You say you are on a drying mooring. I used to keep a fin keeler on a semi-tidal mooring and the mud packed onto the keel and lower hull rendering the A/F completely ineffective. The bilge keelers on the harder bottom moorings had no such problems.

We had to use a hard, scrubbable A/F and give her a scrub from time to time - the mud didn't appreciably slow us down, but once the weed started growing...!

I get a season out of a single coat of cruiser uno. 3 litre tin does my 35' long keeler (only draws 4') and it only needs the slime pressure washed off at season end.

boat kept on mooring at Tighnabruaich for last 5 years.

Started with two coats the first year. Use the leftovers to double coat the leading edges.

Next years coat just goes on top. Its the lack of hard work that i like.

1 coat of Uno is about the same price as two coats of the others.

The wine was for me (a very grateful uncle after I helped him with his Shrimper) but for some reason my parents expected it to be posted to them to pass on. I hadn't warned them that I was having the antifoul delivered to them because I wouldn't be available to receive it, so they expected that to be posted to me.

Against their expectations, the antifoul went to them and the wine to me. On the day, we were each expecting the other to bring the paint, and had to buy it from the local swindlery instead.

Yeah . They were just about to do that last spring when I phoned up to query the discontinuing of the particular paint I used (can't remember what it's called now). They sent me to a prototype of their new yotty website which wasn't live yet.

Presumably Jotun noticing that a lot of yotties were buying their fishing boat paint and wanting to cash in. Is the old stuff still obtainable at the old prices somewhere?

Was it SeaGuardian you wanted? You can still get SeaForce and SeaQueen (the nearest replacement) if you look at the marine (as opposed to yacht) site.

I haven't bought it yet, but I'll probably try Jotun Seaforce 30 on the basis that if it actually lasts two or three seasons (as the manufacturer claims it will), then it will save me time and money over the other solutions that I was considering.

A few years ago we got a great "bargain" from Duncan's in Glasgow - Seago A/F. we wanted the navy blue. It went on very well and looked great .... until immersion, when it promptly went very light blue. Despite the colour change, it did work quite well (Clyde cruising). However, if colour is important to you, I'd recommend against the Seago.

I am keen on the Jotun stuff but i wouldn't reckon on getting 2 or 3 seasons - remember this is really a commercial vessel product and the life claims are based on not spending most of the time stood still.

I got 2 seasons out of SeaGuardian with little fouling but some barnacles.

Troubadour: Thank you. Good point on my assumption that I would get longer protection (duration) out of the Jotun Seaforce 30. I'll probably buy anti-foul paint over the weekend, and might yet opt for GaelForce over Jotun at the last minute.
