X-split charge splitter wiring

OK, to clarify my suggestion:- the charger is outputting rectified ac at 14.5v zero to peak. This would normally be smoothed to 14.5 v DC at the battery connections, and the meter would read this figure. The batteries act as enormous smoothing capacitors.
At the splitter input however, the waveform is shielded from the smoothing effect of the batteries by the splitter circuitry and so is a zero to peak form.
The typical multimeter set to DC range will measure this waveform as an intermediate, (rms?) figure, not the peak of 14.5 v.
Over to the electrical boffins!.

Thanks, and in the absence of any boffins I'll happily go with your explanation given that it all seems to work just fine.

I purchased an X-Split (and 90A) altenator from Driftgate direct about 5 years ago to replace a very old Lucas system..

I was supplied with two drawings by the very helpfull people at Driftgate. Drawing one showed the Sense terminal connected to the Pos term of battery One. This was the prefered solution with the supplied Prestolite altenator.

2 years later I replaced the old Perkins engine with a new Volvo and I asked Drifgate how to connect the Xsplit to the Volvo altenator they supplied a second drawing showing the sense terminal not connected to anything !. I phone them and the reply was that "as they were not aware of the spec of my new altenator they would not recommend bypassing the altenator machine sense altenator by connecting it to the battery"

I have now used the XSplit in the unsensed mode with excent results for the past 3 years charging my 110 AHr starter and 220AHr House batteries.

A true install and forget product.

Regards

That's good to hear. I bought the first one for my new engine install as I wasn't sure that the Iskra alternator on the new Beta was compatible with my existing Adverc controller but have found, subsequently, that I can keep the Adverc with a simple mod. for the field wire.

I bought a second one because they were such good value! I've a couple of projects in mind including a bow battery for the windlass and using one in the motorhome.

They're on ebay for £23 if anyone else wants one.
