I remember seeing an add some years ago advertising a waterproof writing board, suitable for doing a sketch of charts for entering ports as a quick reference guide . are they still available and if so where can i get one

Use a chinagraph pencil on a smooth bit of GRP cockpit coaming or cabin top and just wipe off with a rag and a little polish if needed when your done with it.

We do a 50 page A6 sized pad for 2.20 (YBWF discount available) as part of our safety kit 'ingredients'. They are great so long as you dont leave then in the sun - the pages stick together. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The RYA publish a wet notes booklet for about 3 or 4 quid. It maybe a bit small though to start drawing pics on.

One of those write on ... then pull the tab to clear boards like the we used to have as kiddies ... "Magic Board's" they used to call 'em ...

Fancied it as a quick jot board ... but all the ones you find now have kiddie / baby stuff round them .....

But really you could create a wipe on / off board easily .... piece of stiff plastic card ... fablon sticky-back covering it and chinagraph pencil. (Reason to cover in Fablon - it is easier to clean than normal plastic card ... often has very slight grooving etc.)

Bit of Formica covered board? Nylon chopping board? Use a Chinograph pencil and wipe clean with a rag [or even better, a rag moistened with meths]

A friend of mine (Geoff of Stanpit) made a very useful board out of Warite or Formica with a pencil on s atring to one corner. It was perfectly satisfactory and wiped clean.

I got a bit of white plastic coated hardboard + a permanent marker and a little box with a sponge and meths - sorted, I thought. But plastic wasn't melamine ( prob pvc) so marker wouldn't come off too well and the ghosts got too confusing. It's finding the white formica that's the problem nowadays. Waterproof paper at A4 or even A5 sounds a good idea but....pricey ?

A chinagraph pencil is better because it is just some kind of soft wax that doesn't soak in like a solvent based ink. Also the formica doesn't have to be white, just light coloured enough to be able to see the black marker clearly.

I have printed out all the tidal streams for the Solent & encapsulated them using the standard envelopes found in any stationers. I then use a whiteboard pen to enter dates & times. This wipes off easily & leaves no ghosts etc. You could also do the same idea, to knock up an aide memoire or whatever. This is also a LOT chaeper than waterproof paper!

Not only plastic covering ... but also scanned and calibrated into chart plotting software .. so GPS signal combined with time - gives me boat position in the data sheets .. all I have to do is check HW time .. pick right sheet and load up .. another window has the proper chart ...

Thanks for the plug Roger! I'll just add that I used an ordinary 2b pencil and toothpaste is the secret to rubbing it off afterwards. Much less messy than chinagraph.
