If you are out and about to or from West Mersea this weekend you need to know there is a wreck in the channel close to the Nass Bn. If you take a look at the ECP site there's a diagram that may help.

Close call

My middle son nearly bought that boat back in the summer. Decided against as it needed an awful lot of work, basically rotten. I am surprised it got as far as the Nass from what my son said about it.

He made a good choice.

Getting rid of it may be difficult. The word (unsubstantiated) is that the owner doesn't have the wherewithall to have it lifted and the fear is that it will quickly fill with silt where it is making lifting very difficult.

Is that one of the blue and yellow ones? Never seen one in use, shame boat is put away for the winter!

The only place I saw one was when the trawler sank near the Roach entrance in the Crouch. Now has Isolated Danger mark...

It's "interesting" (if you're sad) to note that the Emergency Wreck Buoy is not widely publicised. It's not in 5011 (not surprising since it shouldn't be there long enough to be on a chart), but is in the RYA Theory papers most years....

why go behind Osea Island?

Tillergirl said in an indicated thread that the boat hit Osea road and lost engine and ended up at Nass Beacon (which is a fair way from Osea - why not drop anchor or something I don't know).
But why go behind the island and over the road and not stay in the river - only reason I can think of of is that if they had wind over tide, it can kick up a little bit rough between Osea and Steeple?
Any ideas?

They didn't lose the engine until 'out' of the river. Quite how far out I don't know but they were found off the Molliette (Cocum Hills) and towed back from there by a Mersea Fisherman. It is clear though that they kept going after striking the roadway. Perhaps they thought that was the way to go or decided that it was a valid short cut. I guess with a big enough tide they might have made it.
