Anyone have experience of having their hull wrapped in vinyl ?
Like the boy racers do with their cars?

Im just looking at a daunting bit of hull repainting and wondering if wrapping might be a quicker alternative?

I heard concerns voiced before that it might induce osmosis cos of trapped water ?

I dunno..

Anyway.. if anyone has tried it or has a useful bit of info on it I'd appreciate it...
Thanks

PBO did a fairly detailed review of vinyl wrapping two or three years ago - should be available through their back numbers section.

Some guys were doing a few boats in the yard, so I did look into it a bit. Perfect for those racing yachts who need to change the name of this week's sponsor...
I am happy to believe that the product itself doesn't deteriorate in some years, but as other pro's in the yard polishing gel said to me, the issue is scuffs and scrapes, and the risk that you end up with too many bits of fairly obvious vinyl sticking plaster all over the place. I guess then, it just depends how many dings you get and the state of the current gel.
I also noticed that of course any blemish in the underlying gel is visible in the vinyl.
Mind you, there was another boat being very very carefully polished by hand..apparently it had a paint spray job, but the paint was so thin that they did not dare risk any mechanical polishing.
No easy answer, it seems !

Thanks for all that..

Yeah.. it was just a thought really.. basically me being lazy..
But its not cheap and not long lasting it would seem....

For painting ... I am lookin at needing to build building a shelter for the boat and all the rigmarole around that...

But, as you say, with wrapping yeh still wouldn't avoid all the sanding and finishing.. blemishes show through.. so it has to be done either way...

So ... heigh ho.. its off to work I go...

For how long do you actually see your own hull ?
I’d be more interested in sorting the inside and workings of the boat than worry about a few scuffs.

Heh, yeah.. you haven't seen the state of my hull..
Its gotten pretty embarrassing...

I don't know what the previous owner did exactly.. but it appears to be he painted white paint over the original blue gelcoat...
And now thats all peeling off ... in a weird speckled way...

So I have to do something .... see the attached photos

I swear no shotguns were used in the making of this mess.. heh heh...
