My Simrad WP 30 autopilot has not worked satisfactorily since I bought the boat last September. The immediate problem was the drive belt, which was so old it was cracked, had stretched and was slipping. I replaced the belt and upgraded the clutch with the manufacturers authorised replacements. I believe this renewal of parts to have been carried out totally successfully.

However this didn’t fully cure the pilot. Instead it would temporarily hold a course, for a minute or few at best, and then gradually increase its over reaction until it completely lost the plot and gave up. I have tried all the makers’ suggestions and also tried every combination of settings to “Gain”, “Wheel to wheel lock” and “Seastate”. No success. The last effort I made was to reset the fluxgate compass. This involved the boat turning in circles whilst in very calm conditions. This seemed to go through OK, with all indications from the pilot looking to be correct, until a final indication from the pilot was received to say that the resetting of compass was unsuccessful. After much head scratching I now consider that my problem may be that the pilot’s compass is being affected by being too close to an external magnetic source.

There are 13/15 kg gas bottles in cockpit lockers on either side of the wheel pedestal. The pedestal is fitted with the autopilot. I have measured the distance from the pilot’s fluxgate compass to the nearest part of the nearest bottle (its shoulder) to be approx 0.55m. I have checked the bottles and found them to have magnetic qualities -. i.e. a magnet will “stick” to them when applied. My next effort will involve removing the suspect bottles and retrying the resetting process, but this won’t be possible for me to do for a week or two.

Now for my questions: Has any other ‘forumite’ had similar experiences? Do you think I’m on the right track? If I am, could I overcome the magnetic effect by rigging up faraday cages around the bottles – by, for instance, wrapping them in non-magnetic material such as aluminium foil? This would be ideal, so that I can leave the bottles in their designated lockers. I will be trying my ideas as soon as I can, but in the meantime I could be a happier bunny if someone out there can give me any hope for the future.

Sounds like it could be the gas bottles, 0.55m is very close - Simrad's manual suggests 1m to be a safe distance. There's also a chance it could be magnetic interference from a binnacle compass if you have one.

It's unlikely that you'd be able to shield the gas bottles successfully. How about using an external fluxgate compass?

Hi I have a Simrad WP30 my boat is a little to big at 44ft so only use in calm conditions or motoring in no wind mine does the same as yours its been back twice under guarantee, and its failed soon after, ive tried all that you suggest, to no avail . I dont think it a very good piece of kit .
cheers bobt

Definitely the gas bottles ans what is more every time you trade them in for new ones you will get a completely different set of behaviour as they will come with a completely new magnetic field.

Too many cusotomers over too many years with the same problem, so I know what I am talking about.

Now try to find somewhere to move them too!

If you can get hold of an ATC600 and Corus leads you can connect a remote compass to get away from the bottles, but not cheap and no longer available from Simrad.

Ah... my favorite bit of junk.

I fell for the blurb and installed it on our previous boat.
We had no gas bottles, and had similar experiences.
The longest ever it held a course was for 10 minutes.

Sent back to Simrad once - under warranty - no fault found.
Never worked.

If it's for your Warrior - cut your losses now.
Bin it (or stick it on eBay) and get a decent inbard one.

Stange thing is that I had an older Navico WP (before they were Simrad) type with the motor on a hinge and a belt drive. Worked so well on my little 21 foot motor cruiser that I transferred it to a Westerly 31 foot Pentalnd and it was not so great in that hunted a bit. On the litlle motor crcuiser it would steer a better course than I could even in very rough conditions, never felt it was so trustworthy on the Pentland, sometimes birling the boat round 180 degrees.

Sounds familar only mine is the wp5000 purchased new. discovered in the end the pressure on the belt seems to determine the feedback response but eventually swings to port.
I believe the drive end is 1/4 hp which is quite powerful and my consideration is to modify to control with the Raymarine S2 compass and computer system without the drive. Any opinions appreciated.

Hi
If you know that it definitely the gas bottles ,so do Simrad
My gas bottles are about 2mts away as are on most boats could not Simrad do some kind of sheild to prevent it happening.Or is it as said before not a very good bit of kit cheers bobt

Thanks to you all for the advice. As soon as I can retry resetting the compass I'll do so with both bottles at a greater distance and if/when I find that then the pilot works OK I'll try one or two ideas in regards to putting them back again in their lockers with some sort of magnetic shielding. Perhaps line the lockers with aluminium sheeting. I'll let you know the end results. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
