Would you reuse these hose-clamps?

The corrosion seems to be quite superficial.

I'm torn between "don't be daft, they're perfectly good", which I think they are, and "don't be daft, it's only a couple of quid".

One looks a bit worse than the others, but something that's tarnished slightly in 5(?) years of use is perhaps 'tried and tested' and likely to live another 5.
If they feel rough as you do them up, bin them though.

I might unscrew them fully and give them a good wiggle, discarding any that showed any weakness, and possibly all if this is more than one or two.

The boat is 25 years old - many parts are original including, in my estimate, the hoses that these were securing.

I have no better guess than that as to their age - the PO may or may not have replaced them at some time.

I would give them a clean and check over and reuse. One does look bad, but it may just be a bit of surface 'rust'. If they are 25 years old they are possibly better quality than new ones.

Never talk yourself out of your first thought* ..... you have doubts or you wouldn't have asked the question....

Chuck 'em... into your spares box maybe... but chuck 'em...

*You are allowed to talk yourself out of a 'she'll be right' thought but not out of an 'I think it would be foolhardy to put to sea today' thought ......

Best advice I have seen in quite a while.

I’ve been using my secondhand ones as the ( allegedly) pointless extra hose clamp below the waterline. SWMBO insists on using them but then she never had to remove any old hoses…

I wouldn't reuse them nor would I put them in my spares box - there's enough rubbish in there already. As for double clipping - waste of time, provided the right size of hose is used.

me too thanks.

Very wise. Thank you, Frank.

The lack of double-clips was mentioned in the purchase survey (as was the corrosion in these photos, in fact) and my insurers made a point of requiring them.

When asked their exact requirements they linked me to https://marinehowto.com/proper-installation-of-double-hose-clamps/

I too am dubious that the second clip is really necessary, but I do like Pants because their underwriter seems to understand boats and was practical in regards to the survey recommendations. When shopping for quotes another insurer told me they would not cover the boat in the water until every point had been addressed.

I am a life long double clipper. I acquired this habit from reading PBO and YM. I suspect that any benefit is psychological.

I think that, ‘theoretically’, if two clips are used then by analogy with seizings in the rigging the clip further from the end should not be as tight as the end one. But maybe this is wrong? Anyway if one old and one new (one borrowed, one blue?) are used I suspect that given equally corrosive conditions the old one will fail first?
