You would very much like to do a trip of 13 miles in coastal waters to leave the boat for winter storage, boat is fine at idle but header tanks chuck coolant out at speed on both engines. Engines at idle gives 6 knots. No echo sounder, no log, nav lights not working, its a bit misty, vis about 1 mile. Breeze F2 to F3. One person on board. You have life jacket, handheld VHF and GPS, flares, PLB, no liferaft or dinghy, there is a shipping lane to cross and several ferry routes some of which are high speed.

Would you go?

are you tired of life, or do you normally run at the red line ?

If this is a teaser, the answer is probably it was done by a coastguard unit somewhere in Europe.

I did it today, no bother at all, just trundled there.

Indoor boat storage for winter at Bembridge is incredibly good value, 6 months in a great big shed, crane out, jet wash and launch, £1200.

I've been at it again...engines are fixed, but still no nav electronics, I did have a chart with the passage marked on.

Now in Cowes for a winter afloat.
