British Waterways are looking into providing new moorings and facilities to get boaters into London during the Olympics in 2012.

Do people think this is a good idea? Would you bring your boat into London to watch the Games?

BW surevy is online here http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2012moorings

Olympics! I wouldn't even use the energy it takes to press the button on my remote to switch my TV on. I have as much interest in Sport as I have in who is the Mayor of the remotest collection of huts in Samarkand.

Funny you should mention that, Zoir Mirzayev says you never call him anymore.

I think its a great idea and i assume the moorings will be left in place after the games ? About time there where more mooring places in London .

A great idea. The London Olympics is going to be a blast, so the more opportunity to enjoy and stay on the boat can only be a good thing for me. I'm worried it's going to be a mad scramble for the likes of St Kats et al, with mooring fees likely to sky rocket, that's assuming you can even get a sniff of a mooring over the period. :)

Good luck with mooring at Excel to watch the rowing.....

It is being held at Dorney Lake!!

Indeed so, and that's why it would be cheaper. Unless the local authority and riparian owners take a leaf out of Henley's book and charge 10 grillion pounds a foot per hour to slow below 4.5 knots and commensurately more if you actually stop:-)

I find this concept of 'cruising to the Olymics' rather odd.

Would one wish to stay in the proximity of the games for the whole 12 days or so or be present just for certain events? Just how close to the venues is one actually likely to be able to get? We know there are no moorings of note on the river other than ST Kats, Limehouse, the docks etc and access to the Bow Creeks and Canal areas will be of little use to cruisers.

It appears from what others here say that prime locations like ST Kats and Limehouse are already spoken for so please can someone explain to me exactly how 'cruising to the Olympics' is going to be a real option?

The Lee can accommodate quite large boats for quite a fair distance upstream, and of reasonable draught too.

I think the questionnaire was aimed at BW customers. From the questions asked they were considering pontoon moorings near to the site (the actual water through the Olympic site being closed to navigation for the duration)

So it's not quite as daft as one would think. Indeed - I've just remembered that they asked about shopping facilities / water / fuel / sanitation / electricity hookup and rubbish disposal. That suggest to me that facilities might be of interest for people working at the site?
