Would You Charter In Thailand in 2007

Thinking of taking the family for a bit of a big holiday in the Far East. I looked at including a weeks charter at Phuket. Prices are pretty cheap, at a little more than half of what I was expecting. So of course, what is the catch?

Guess the Thai Government reorg may be an issue, plus of
course getting over the Tsunami.

Planned dates are early July. Would you?

Fabulous place, wonderful people, great cruising ground.
I have a few friends who live in Phuket. You'll be hard press to find evidence that there was a Tsunami.

I spend a lot of time there on business and holidays with my family (just returned a few weeks ago) - VERY safe.

Tsunami? What Tsunami? They've moved on!

Government? Absolutely no big deal ... and no currency colapse like in 1997.

However, I would agree the price to be paid in Thai Baht, and then pay a deposit. The currency is more likely to fall than to rise and you could well save 10% further.

July, though, is the latest you really want to go. For the last few years the monsoon has been making itself felt earlier (though not so noticeable in the South). However, July is HOT - as in 35 C and VERY humid.

One tip: if you take more than the most elementary bag to Thailand you are seriously overpacking. For example, you can buy a T-Shirt for £1.00 / mens shorts for £3 or so ... travel light.

(oh, and learn some Thai - it's very easy. You should be able to count to 1,000, and have 20 or 30 other phrases. Best learned from an audio CD. Not only do you end up paying much less when shopping, you definitely receive a warmer welcome everywhere).

I have some recent Thai guide books I no longer need. I'd be happy to make a deal with you on these too.

I didn't look very hard. Just went to Sunsail for a GibSea 33. Costs were around £750 for a week. That seems good value to me, but as I say, I did not look around at all.
