Full of vim and vigour I decided that today I would begin titivating and start by servicing the winches which had become a little bit squeaky.

They are Barbarossa 32's and I attacked the port one with a whacking great screwdriver. It succumbed straight away and I carefully lifted of the barrel to reveal the gears and what turned out to be 2 captive roller races - one on top of the other, separated by a plastic collar…..faaaantastic. I splodged around a bit of grease - dripped oil down the centre section and replaced the barrel - no problem - no squeaks!.

Moving to the starboard full of confidence, again the central screw succumbed easily (I must admit I expected them to be seized) and I lifted of the barrel being careful not to disturb the roller races - which I should have said slide up and down the central shaft. Before I could see easily what was happening it transpired that the upper roller race had come away with the barrel - I watched in slow motion fascination as the race fell on to the side deck, bounced - performing a graceful arc, hit the toe rail and disappeared into the bloody Hamble. The boatyard reverberated to some severe swearing - I was not a happy bunny.

The winch still seems to function correctly - so I might have got away with it, but I'm not sure how it will behave under load. I'll find out on Monday as I've arranged a day sail.

So…..HELP…please. Where can I find a spare roller race for a Barbarossa 32 winch?

well! You could start by advertising for one in the 'WANTED' Forum, you never know your luck :)

Barbarossa actually manufacture Harken winches and they have a UK sales outlet. I think you will find that the bearings are the same as those used in the Harken 32.

Iain's suggestion of trying Harken is the obvious place to start but if that draws a blank....

I think it is unlikely that Barbarossa/Harken will make the bearings themselves, the liklihood is that they buy in a "standard" bearing from a bearing manufacturer. Fotunately you still have the bearing on the other side for reference so you could take it to one of the specialist bearing suppliers ..... In my area I use BRT Bearings in Brighton but I don't think they are unique, there will be several in your Yellow Pages. Incidently, IF you can get what you want from a bearing supplier, it will probably be about 1/3 of the price of the same article from Harken.

The bearing will be a standard part that you can locate through a bearing supplier.
I use Henderson Bearings at Segensworth, just up the road from you or, if it is a common size, RS components (Hedge End) for convenience. If you have any problems locating a replacement let me know the principle dimensions and I will find it for you in the new year.

Late advice

Sorry, this will be a bit 20/20 hindsight:

When servicing winches, take a cardboard box, and cut a circular hole in the bottom, and place it over the winch. That way, when small bits go on walkabout (in casu), they tend to stay in the box. Although you shouldn't underestimate Sod's Law.
