Would you be buying a yacht any time soon???

Was planning on exploring the UK for the first couple of years or so as I can barely be trusted to park the thing, hopefully things will be clearer by then. I hear gov is preparing for 2 years of recession, so unless you have uncontrollable boating urges waiting might pay off.

I don't expect on having a job come September but so long as I've got freedom of movement I don't mind too much - I could last a good while on my modest savings (assuming they don't turn to mush!) and go cycling around Spain or something.

I've seen a few lovely boats in the Med - was thinking I could buy one, fly over and just go cruising around until enough university students decide to come back and study degrees. Probably 2021 if we're honest (at best). Also, lack of tides and reliable sunshine seem very attractive while I learn to actually sail a boat.

Can't think for the life of me if you are financially able to , why would you postpone buying one (obviously wait till lockdown has ended though)
If you wait and wait for the perfect time / situation the years slip by very quickly.
Of course if you are not that bothered or unsure if it's what you really want, then you probably don't really want it.

This is true and while I'm glad I didn't buy before lockdown, it has made me realise that money is rather meaningless when there is no economy in which to spend it and that nothing is really for sure - we built this idea on not taking risks on an idea that things go a certain way, but who the hell knows what' going to happen. Definitely best to reach out and follow your dreams while the chance is there.

Reality of life has proven that there are two sides to that story.

1. If you wait for the perfect moment there is a good chance it will never happen. Hence "carpe diem" and follow your dream today without further delay.

2. There is - hopefully - the day of tomorrow and you will not be the first one to discover that your dream has evaporated your life savings without guarantee of replenishment. Keep this in mind when you go for option 1. How much you need is your choice. Just don't be disappointed about expectations not coming true.

My friend signed the paperwork on a rustler 36, the day before lockdown
I've done the same thing, I'm self employed and had a full diary for the next 6 months and that's all disappeared in the wind. The yard where my new yacht is has gone into lockdown as well!

Bear in mind that unless you have an Irish passport you'll be subject to Schengen (90 days in 180) visa rules after the end of this year if Brexit transition period is not extended...

I was going to sell a house to buy a boat. It’s all on hold till after the lockdown is lifted. I hope the upcoming housing market collapse isn’t worse than the upcoming boat market collapse!

I have a boat, or actually a couple of boats. No immediate intent to by another, just a vague notion.
Current situation, puts any of my vague notions on hold. Until the freedom to travel returns. temptations continue, its best if I don’t peruse the yacht sales sites on the internet.
I get heck from my wife if she catches me looking.
She will get over it,

Wow, and people actually voted for this crap. It's unbelievable. It makes me so mad. I'm just hoping for the best really; that when it comes down to it, they'll be sensible adults. Even though my name and my father's name are comically Irish, we don't get passports on that alone unfortunately.

Desperately hoping Scotland gets her independence soon and I can get an EU passport via my Weggie grandparents. I'd probably move up there up there too!

I think that depends on your appetite to risk. You may be able to afford it now but....

If the mortgage is paid off, kids settled, large pension pot that will keep you nicely then losing the job is no issue. Sail off into the sunshine.

IF you still have a mortgage, kids, and are too young to retire then sinking your spare cash into a boat now is probably not the safest option. 3 months it maybe as we'll know what the world looks like

Imperialism

the attempt of one country to control another country, esp. by political and economic methods

or

Imperialism, state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas.

This is the EU by definition and has been for some time... well 1992 if we want to put a more less date on it. Think about all the things you have to change about your country to join the EU which after all was supposed to be a free trade and free movement of labour collective.

Perhaps better discussed in another topic? (It matters not one jot to me because we've left).

Our Morris Dancing will be free from EU interference for another thousand years!

I'd be having a word with the navigator as I always understood that the Irish Sea was between Ipswich and Dublin.

No plans ever to buy another boat again. Quite happy with my Gib'Sea.

There is a fair bit of England and Wales as well between Ipswich and Dublin if going in a straight line................................

It was Ipswich, coasting along to the Scilly Islands, probably across to the East coast of Ireland (or Wales depending in winds), then towards Dublin as far as possible given time limits, drop the boat and go back to work and then later get it back across to North Wales/North West of England. We had about 2 weeks for that. The guy who bought the boat did so in January - now it's sitting there on the other side of the country gathering dust and spending his cash.

Tbf Ireland is collateral damage in the EU's ongoing imperialistic expansion and while there is that 90 days in 180 you can apply for a visa for a longer or more regular stay (as you would with non eu countries). This is on a country by country basis.

Visa policy - Migration and Home Affairs - European Commission

You can afford to go yachting... you can afford the extra visa fee.
And of course the Irish are perfectly oblivous / apathetic to imperialist ambitions, having never been the collateral damage from that kind of thing previously....?‍♂️

The dumbest thing I've read so far today....and I've been on Twitter.

Ireland still thinks the EU benefits them and it would be far from the first time a country has willingly signed up to be part of the expansion. That's okay. But at the moment it Ireland and particularly Northern Ireland are at risk of having a border straight between them because the EU think they can push their agenda and use their economic clout to push another party into submission. Won't be the first time and won't be the last either. Welcome to Enlightened Imperialism.
