Would this be underpowered?

Hiya,

Saw this on the yachtmarket and thought it looked a really nice boat and decent value.

Sunseeker Portofino 34 Used Boat for Sale 1991 | TheYachtMarket

However, it only has 2 x AD41DP's on it - which I think are 200hp each - rather than KAD42's.

Do you guys think this would be a bit sluggish to plane - or would that kind of power be adequate to overcome the lack of the superchargers?

Thank you.

Under powered, no. Depends what you want. A finer pitch prop set will get you onto the plane sacrificing a few knts top end or slower to plane and same top end.
Less top end and finer pitch = less strain.

My 42;s ran great on C3 without supercharger at all speeds. With Super charger and C4's it will only hold below 2k rpm and above 3krp. I have to throttle through the 2-3 k rev range or sit with the SC's screaming. Horses for courses

Ok that's interesting.... I am getting too old for watersports really now - however the kids may take to ringos and/or Wakeboards - neither of which require rocketship acceleration. I know it's a bit big for all that, but it's too small to have a really quick rib on the bathing platform, so it would have to perform well in it's own right.

Perhaps worth a convo with the broker.

Does anyone know if viewings are possible at the moment - or is it all virtual?

I'm also looking at a Leader 805 with a single diesel - there aren't many about in UK though (some abroad) - that would give me much more "sportsboat" at the expense of "accomodation" and probably long distance cruiseability....

It would also give me the option to trail it home in the winter - assuming I can get it on a trailer and under the 3500kg limit - does anyone know the dry weight of one of them with a KAD43 in please?

You'd be surprised. A 290/3m GRP hull rib on davits with a 15 to 20 hp 2 stroke on flies. I can outrun the local RNLI RIB and it's more than powerful enough to kneeboard, wakeboard on a kite surfing board, banana boat on a SUP and pull certain inflatibles. You wont be able to all out trick and slalom etc, but have loads of fun nonetheless

Colin Rowles sold my last boat. Absolute spot on chap.

I have a 15HP Yamaha 2-Stroke in the Garage which I used for a 270 inflatable - but it was an inflatable keel and it wasn't really that fast - do the GRP Hulls on a RIB make all that much difference? I thought the trade off would have been my airdeck was lighter than a GRP rib so it should have been as quick?

Yes they do and significantly so and ali hulls are becoming popular and they are the lightest yet at ~40 kg. My previous dink was a SIB with ali deck and inflated keel. You could feel the skin and bladder deform at speed and even flip from side to side creating a lot of drag. My grp hull is stepped and has lifting strakes and chines. Speed increase is nearly double and can do it with more weight onboard
