Have just had much to big freshwater tank cut down to fit hole under decking. Now holds around 35 gals. With approx 70 gals water and 300 gals diesel aboard I reckon that adds around (370 X 10 Ibs approx ?) to weight on boat.Any body know actual weight of gallon of diesel.

And here is the weekend weather..

Re: Diesel weight

I'm certainly no expert but I always thought petrol wighed 8lb , diesel 9lb and water 10lb per gallon. Petrol definitely lighter than diesel.

Re: Diesel weight

Isn't it easier to stay metric, 1 litre of water equals 1kg, so diesel with density of 0.8 equals 0.8kg...... err I think ?

Re: Diesel weight

True

but everyone else was talking gallons and tons

now 1 gal = 4.545 or is it 4.546 lit
so 1 gal = 4.54 tec Kg roughly = 9.08 + .908 lbs call it 10 lbs

Now I seem to remember petrol is 80% by wieght but I still think diesel is heavier.

is this a girly question?

did you put the tank in the middle of the boat? if not, will you have to put something of equal weight on the opposite side to make sure the boat is trimmed correctly?

Re: Diesel weight

An imperial gallon is defined as 10lbs - its not approximate.

By the way an inch is defined as 25.4 mm.

Under EC Directive 98/70 diesel has a maximum specific gravity of 0.845.

Re: Diesel weight

Just looked this up in my little blue Bosch handbook:

Density of fuel:
Petrol (super unleaded) = 0.730 to 0.780 so 0.730kg/litre etc...
Petrol (regular unleaded) = 0.715 to 0.765
Diesel = 0.820 to 0.860

So 1 gallon of diesel weighs 4.54 times 0.860 times 2.2lbs = 8.59lbs approx

Re: Water tank position.

Yes. put tank in roughly same position as old leaky one.has 2nd hot tank opposite to sort balance.Have replaced 20 year old manky galvenised tank with stainless.

NV.

Re: Diesel weight

So petrol is some 15% less dense than Diesel, if fuel was sold by weight instead of volume then the economy of the diesel might not seem so good...
