My Fairline Weekend has a light mounting at the top centre of the windscreen. On top is a small white 'riding light' , below it there is a clear lense about 3" high, semi-circular, facing forward with quite a large tubular bulb inside. I haven't found a switch to illuminate it, so it may be faulty, but does anyone know what it's for? She also has nav lights which work fine.

I've attempted to attach a pic (never done it here before) which if you zoom in shows it fairly clearly....I was expecting replies along the lines of 'oh yeah that's a so-and-so' cos everyone except me would know what it was..... :-)

It looks like a steaming light with a small anchor light on top. The steaming light should come on with your port (red), starboard (green) and stern lights for use when you are under way at night. The anchor light should have a separate switch and should be used when you are anchored at night (except in various conditions discussed elsewhere in the forum).

Check the bulb but it could easily be a corroded connection in the light fitting or its wiring. These lights get little use so the bulbs do not often fail whereas the marine environment is not good for electrical circuits, especially in such an exposed position on the outside of the boat.
