During a quick flicking glance thro the yottie press that hosts this lot, I spotted a LASER flare item. Has anyone any further knowlwdge of this kit - looks better than having the old pyrotechs in a box that run out of date

I think it was PBO which did an article on it last month. I liked the idea, 70 or so hours on 1 battrie. Could be seen for miles. They recomended firing of a traditional flare first though.

Well I also read about the thing and promptly ordered one. That was over three weeks ago and it's not arrived yet. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

I found one being sold on ebay and it arrived from the States this morning. I haven't had a chance to really test it yet but first impressions are that it is possibly not all we might hope.... I got the so-called "Magnum" version and the quoted 20 mile range is only on a clear moonless night, in daylight you can only expect about a mile. By day I can't help thinking that orange smoke would be more visible though of course you can aim the laser at the bridge of a passing ship and it will last much longer than a flare.

I will give it a better test when I get the opportunity but I fear that may not be for a week or two.

But it isn't so much the range (few flares can be seen 20 miles away) but the duration. I ordered the "magnum" too - mainly because the batteries are supposed to last 72 hours!
