I put out all the fenders I had, I even went to the fender shop and bought some more. Where we are the boats slew really badly in a strong wind, so you probably won’t hit each other broadside. The swim platform, or the corner of the gunnels are lethal weapons when an aluminum boat collides with a plastic hull. And I’m in a very exposed position to the main westerly wind, but you can’t fender for every possible wind direction.

Super Yachts berth beam on to a concrete wharf in some marinas .They use huge inflatable fenders in between the wall and boat .This is additional to normal fenders for there size .
So a overly huge inflatable something, preferably a proper fit for purpose thingy floating in between positioned where you think fit should ease your justifiable worries .

What do you suggest? You can buy very large fenders that you pump up and then deflate for storage. But these are very expensive, not something you usually see on a small boat. The other problem is positioning them because the boats move a huge degree depending on wind direction, wind strength, how each boat is tied and how tightly.

you'd probably need two of these huge sausage inflatable fenders Bouba so no matter how the wind blows and how the two boats are about to meet, you'll have protection.
They are I think made out of hypalon and very bloody expensive (but very nice!)

I would suggest you place another ball fender here in case the bathing platform swings into yours or the corner of your boat

Kept an eye out on ebay for a couple of enourmous balloon fenders .Eventually got a pair for around 40.00 quid.
Needed a b. good clean but they did solve a somewhat similar problem.
We have a steel under structure to our pontoons and if you come in hard enough you really can compress standard fenders enough to allow your gel coat to contact metal.
Gelcoat scratches attract your eye everytime you walk up the pontoon.

You might have just answered your own question … buy a couple of really cheap plastic tender dinghies and stick them in between! Did you get those fenders second hand off a battleship?
I'm lucky in that I'm stern on to a large pontoon with a finger pontoon along one side and handily, being on the end of a row I can tie up the boat so as to pull it away from the finger pontoon so that it doesn't touch anything. I have got some of those sausage fenders on both pontoons though, just for coming alongside!

My photo doesn’t convey the sheer of my neighbors hull, and his gunnels and railings tower over mine and are of battleship proportions! Ball fenders are the only way to keep distance between us.
My normal summer place is on a pontoon but for winter it’s back to Med berthing, and I’ve just ordered a hydraulic passerelle. This will allow me to stand off another few more valuable centimeters, and hopefully avoid all the sharp edges of his swim platform. It’s ten thousand well spent, unfortunately delivery date is six weeks :disgust:

Serious question; What am I missing here? Is it just because it’s aluminium that you’re worried about the boat?

Maybe the captain is the best pilot on earth, or have you seen something that makes you think that a collision is inevitable?

Maybe, but if the placement and number of his fenders are anything to go by, I wouldn't hold my breath.
I'd be tempted to throw also his boat choice into the equation, if it weren't that for all we know he could have grabbed it FoC...

Otoh, it's only fair to expect a decent fendering also from neighbours.
If the other boats would be as fendered as yours, it would take a bloody awful storm to collide, I reckon!

I wouldn't be too worried about your topsides. By the end of the winter all your stern gear will have fizzed away.

The neighbor does have over large fenders. But as I said, the boats really twist and squirm in a strong wind. Also my boat is at the end of the pontoon so it is not as confined as his boat is as he has neighbors both sides. Also I use cross ropes and he doesn’t. So the permutations as to who will hit who where are infinite :disgust:
