World\'s Oldest MOBO Lifted

Today they lifted "Dolly" the World's oldest mechanically driven vessel out of the lake. I think it's the first time in over 30 years.

A REAL motorboat. I bet that doesn't create an unholy wash to upset all the saily type boats.
Never seen a cradle like that before - looks like they're a bit worried about retaining its' shape.

Re: World\'s Oldest MOBO Lifted

The cradle built for Dolly. It's built to support the boat and be capable of being moved around on some giant castors.

1850. Dolly is part of the Windermere Steam Boats Collection which is regarded as the most complete location-specific collection of boats in the world. It includes Esperance and Raven, the oldest and second oldest registered vessels on Lloyds Register of Yachts and also Mavis, which was Arthur Ransome's model for the Swallow of Swallows and Amazons as well as AR's own sailing dinghy and Beatrix Potter's rowing boat.

Re: World\'s Oldest MOBO Lifted

On the point of hull design. When they took out the boiler and ballast it almost rolled over.
Of course, if you think about it, they didn't have any acquired knowledge on powered hull forms, so it would be a sailing hull, modified.

Slender & graceful, looks long legged too. That's real craftmanship.

Come on Lakie - no girlie pics to go with it?

Dolly was recovered from the bottom of Ullswater (although she was a Windermere boat) in 1962 and restored. This is the first attention she's had since then.
This piccy is from the book about her restoration in 1962.

They wheel the cradle away into the big temporary building once it's on the ground.
The steam launches look very pretty swinging through the air. Amazing how delicately the crane applies movement.

Re: World\'s Oldest MOBO Lifted

it puts wooden boats and potential fresh water damage into perspective ......

I was also wondering about wooden boats in the baltic - anyone know how they cope with the lack of salinity ?

Re: World\'s Oldest MOBO Lifted

Interesting thought. Of course these boats are kept in the wet docks inside these sheds. So maybe it's the rainwater that's the killer.
