World\'s Largest Marina - Where?

A recent post made me wonder.

It mentioned Brighton as being the largest UK one at 1,700 berths (if I recall correctly). Here in New Zealand Westhaven in Auckland is the largest with approx 1,500 marina berths.

It is some years since I have visited Marina del Rey in Los Angeles but it had around 6,000 and claimed to be the biggest then.

Does anyone know?

Simple - the Hamble River. It is one big marina from the entrance onto the SOlent all the way up past Swanwick.

DUnno the total number of berths, but there are at least five marinas all joined together, or so it seems from the water.

Re: World\'s Largest Marina - Where?

I can't claim to be on the spot but are they not all little 250-350 berth marinas (3x MDL, Swanwick - don't know about the others)? Would need quite a few of those to get to 6,000 plus.

Perhaps of common interest Bignick is that Bermuda, with a population of of 65,000 has over 5,000 swing moorings (that is not counting the marinas, which are very small) which must be some kinda record. About 1 for every 12 persons.

Visitor rates for us would be around £7.60, not bad really!

Your first point is fair, I was pretty tongue in cheek, just making the point that the Hamble River is nothing but marinas all they way.

Re Bermuda, private car owners are not allowed to tow anything, so all boats have to be moored or kept on the shoreline, if small enough to push into the water. So this would bias any stats on moorings per capita, if anybody is sad enough to compile them.

Second reason for a high proportion of boats, IMO, is that so many people want to get off the island because its too small ! Not quite Gib, HKG or Singapore, but a boat is still a good way of finding some space.

Thirdly, it is quite affluent, and a greater proportion of the population can afford a boat, even if it is a beaten up Boston Whaler.

Hi BigNick

Yes I only knew the number of moorings 'cos I do work for the people that administer them - not cos I am some sort of sad mooring counter around the world /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

As you say, alot of them are taken up with small open boats and one thing I wonder about is how they all stay afloat when there is heavy rain. Some nice big ones too - all in all a very nice place as long as one is on a local income or expenses paid.

Re: Marina del Rey in Los Angeles

Are in fact alot of masts. Very difficult to get an impression from the ground due to the expanse of the place (Woofy's photos from the air do it) so have never taken many photos there; but this is a couple of photos of both sides of one aisle of smaller boats - a mix of power and sail.

Rough scans off slides which I took some years ago but I think not much has changed.

Have to remember that location influences the types of boats alot. From there one is straight out into the big wide Pacific and apart from the Channel Islands, which are quite a long way out from the coast (and pretty barren) not much opportunity for pottering around weekend anchorages, etc.

Marina del Rey is my home marina

This is my home marina! Starting a few years ago there have been many dock replacement and renovations going on in the Marina. There are actually numerous (8-10 if not a dozen) different marina operators along with 5-6 yacht clubs within the larger harbour which has 8 basins. It is all county owned, so defined as one entity with many lessees operating their own marinas within it. They are replacing smaller slips (sub 10m) with larger ones so the total number of slips has been reduced from about 6,000 to nearer 4,500 as of right now with a further reduction to come as more larger slips are added.

Re: World\'s Largest Marina - Where?

Over 10,000 boats share this beautiful harbour, say the Chichester Harbour Conservancy Board, with 9,000 moorings and 2,000 marina berths.

Lets pray they can resist the Hamble marina syndrome and never become the world's largest marina.

Sorry in this case things aren't bigger and better in Texas /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Ampuriabrava in NW Spain is 503 hectares area and 35 kilometres in one main and 55 side channels. Guess that makes it the biggest marina in terms of area (not berths).

Aswade, where are all the boats going to that can no longer fit in with the fewer but larger berths?
