Two points.

I have an in-built Sterling charger. They do not seem to get on. I guess it could be something to do with the waveform. I can't find my 'scope to check.

Can anybody identify the battery charging outlet plug please?

Alas, RS, it seems that your elite driving skills are more advanced than your support ones....

Graham, dunno if this is the model of your generator but there are some Youtube videos of Aldi kit.

Here's a screen dump of one of them, showing the cigarette lighter style 12v socket.

My Honda genny has an 8 amp 12v socket which looks like the old caravan 12v sockets, with two slots at right angles.

Other 12v socket configurations exist.

Is this not explained in the manual ?

It is the socket labelled 12V DC. It will probably make a poor battery charger though which is why it is usually suggested that a mains voltage charger should be used .

Here is a link to the video from which I guess Sarabande took the screen grab

Dont forget to earth the device. ;)

Sorry - insufficient information as usual.

It was the type of socket not its identity (which is clearly labelled). It has two flat pins at 90° to each other separated vertically (identical to the second picture in #4). It claims to chuck out 8 amps but bodging a connection inside was not very special.

I have read elsewhere that the output is a pretty pure sine wave so Mr Sterling should be happy.

The strange thing is that the charger has three outputs which I have fed through three breakers. Switching on a 12 volt output loads the genny which then picks up. Switching on a second output breaker again loads the genny but the breaker trips out.

I now have a simple dumb charger on board that is doing a good job but I would like to understand and maybe fix the apparent Stirling problem. It worked ok on shore power but then it was really only trickle charging.

This is the genny;- https://www.aldi.co.uk/workzone-petrol-inverter-generator/p/096344208706700

An addendum;- The generator developed an oil leak and the output declared itself to be overloaded even with nothing plugged in.

Contacted the Aldi help line and had some interchange of information. The engineer (in Austria) reckoned it could not be repaired and advised a refund from any branch. I took all the correspondence to a local branch the manager of which thought that there were still some around and found one in the north east. For £199.99 for 1800 watts is hard to equal. Replacement has arrived and the warranty starts afresh.

The reliability is still to be proved but the cooperation from Aldi has to be commended.

Coincidentally I have had mine running for 9 hours today charging a boat due to loss of shore power.

I normally slate cheap stuff but on this, of very few occasions, I am happy to suggest they seem a good bit of kit. Even if I throw it away after 3 years.

I don't know where you use your generator but i found this NOTE: This petrol Generator is NOT suitable for:* Marine applications, and should never be used on board water c.raft. The other issue is I can't find the rpm for a Workzone, it is likely to be 3,000 rpm they have a life span of 1,000 hous ours, fitted by the previous owner, commited suicide after 500 hours.

The saving grace is the three year warranty - no questions asked.
