Today my outboard yamaha 2.5 (model 2003) acted as if the clutch was spinning. The engine revved up and the propeller didn't turn anymore or only a little bit anyway not at the speed the engine was running.

I assume there is a problem with the clutch. Before starting to work on the engine is there anyone who has a repair shop manual on this engine? Or who had a similar problem?

The engine runs fine on lower revolutions only on higher speed or with a lot of wind (waves) the engine starts to rev up.

Its a dog clutch. possible theres a problem with it I suppose could also be prolem with the shift rod as its in two parts but ......

The prop appears to be splined onto the propshaft, no shear pin that could have failed, so I assume it has a bonded rubber hub. First thing to check is the hub in the prop.

The cone shaped nut that retains the prop is pinned to the shaft. Put marks on the nut and on prop. Take it for a spin or run it (until it slips) in a tank of water. If afterwards the marks do not line up the prop is spinning on its hub.

Take the prop off and check that you cannot turn the prop shaft when drive is engaged. (apart from an initial part turn)

New prop I reckon if it is a spun hub. but a whole lot easier to fix than pulling it apart to get at the clutch.

Exploded diagrams and parts lists at http://parts.yamaha-motor.com/?ls=outboard

Relevant diags are http://parts.yamaha-motor.com/partimage.gifx?d=67220,2,0,outboard
and http://parts.yamaha-motor.com/partimage.gifx?d=67219,2,0,outboard

They are diags of units imported into the USA. Apologies if your motor is different but I know of no others.
