Seems that the profession sees it as their right to leave a mark on their work. Suppose if you are not willing to put your name on a piece of work the question is why.

I remember a transplant-surgeon doing something similar a couple of years ago which didn’t go down quite so well - I personally wouldn’t have objected though...

This boat would have been built at Priors Boatyard in Burnham on Crouch and all those names on the chainplate were shipwrights and workers at the yard in the 70's!!
 
Thanks for the other link! Maybe Essex boatbuilders were building in Priors boatyard? I don’t know! But all the names were shipwrights that worked at priors I think. Great to see history lives on!

I know that Priors has closed down! I was in burnham earlier this year (now live in Western Australia!) so saw Jon Sanders leave! Is there any chance of getting some more photos of the boat that the signatures were found on? I know many of the relatives of those guys would be interested in seeing more photos of the boat that they built all those years ago!

The boat in question is a Salar 40 built at Essex Boatyard, Wallasea Bay in 1970. At that time few new boats were being built at any of the Burnham yards but Essex Boatyards were producing GRP hulls and fitting them out. The skills of Burnham shipwrights were in high demand and they travelled over the river by ferry.
They put their names on a part of the yacht unlikely to be found for some years, a good bit of history.
