I am currently wintering in the Algarve (Lagos / Portimao) and I need some technical jobs doing on my boat.
Electrical, electronic & watermaker.
Can anybody recomend a reliable service company out here,
OR any companies NOT to use?

Thanks All.

If you're in Portimao, park your boat up the river on the pontoons past the yacht club, walk up to and over the bridge that hopefully you haven't tried to sail under and you'll see a boatyard to south of river. There are some serious workshops there. I suggest you ask some of the liveaboards ashore there first - some of them are quite handy too and may give you a better price.

We are in Lagos and plan to have some work done in the local yard with Sopromar. Everyone we have spoken to recommends them highly. They are not cheap but have an excellent reputation.

You could also tune into the Lagos navigators net on ch 77 at 0930 daily. The net controller will ask if anybody needs any technical help/advice during the broadcast. If you are outside Lagos, switch to high power and you should be able to communicate.

The navigators also have a list of reputable freelancers who may be able to help, or at least give a quote for work.

We are away at the moment but are back from 1 Feb if you want to call round - pontoon E No 51.

Good luck.

There is a frenchman by the name of Michell that installed a watermaker for me and did a lot of other jobs last winter. He is very reliable, does good work and his prices are reasonable. I have no hesitation in recomending him. I have emailed his contact details to you. mention me to him if you use him, Brian with the nauticat at Villamoura

HI,

Moving boats up and down that coast I have had occasion to need a selection of work done. I've used Sopomar in Lagos and found them good. Stay clear of 'Bluewater Yacht Services' in Lagos (second floor of the Marina Shops) I and otherS have had bad experiances there. Michell (as mentioned else) where has done work for me on boats in Villamoura but that's not that far by car from Lagos although i don'ty know how to get intouch wiht him.

Just remebmer when getting anything done down there in Spain they say Mañan. In Portugal NOTHING is ever that urgent.

We used both Bluewater and Sopromar. Sopromar did all the work on our boat in the winter and although the boat looked good when we picked it up at easter, we had anumber of problems with the engine and outboard due to work not properly completed. Also what ever they put on the bottom (supposed to be Micron) didn't work very well! Our brief experince with Bluewater despite being warned to stear clear of them was good, they were efficient and reasonably priced, so I would try them again. Each to their own!

I've used both Sopromar and Bluewater also. Believe only differences to be Soppromar are Portgese owned and most staff same nationality and they own slip faciliteis etc, Bluewater expat run with most sub contractors expats also.

Both can be expensive relative to the local wages.

I'd suggest deal direct with expat subcontractors or the chap who emailed above.......

I am unfamiliar with Bluewater Algarve but I do have experience with a company called Bildge Water All Garbage.
This company offer yacht destruction and customer over charging facilities.
They also have a sales office it is called Apollo Duck and you can do this yourself and save money.
It is an online boat sales service.
Bildge Water All Garbage have baboon cages in Portimao and Lagos.
The main baboon cage at Portimao is run by Simple “Pie man” Wrong. ( For it is “he” the suntanned pie eating smarmy unpleasant one.) who can often be seen trying to climb into his cage as he forgot the key.
The main baboons wear blue t shirts and the new baboons wear orange t shirts.
They can be seen in their native habitat…The café next door , where they plan their next rip-off of their customers.
They can destroy your boat for very little charge currently 50 Euro’s an hour for basic damage.
Bildge Water All Garbage have fired all their talented workers as of Christmas 2009 to favor the ones who can ride bicycles. These bicycle riding baboons can often be seen trying to deceive customers at Portimao.
These baboons are talented ; a perfectly good yacht can be turned into firewood in only 3 months or for an even more extortionate fee it can be done in 2 months depending on visits to the café.
The best baboons can be seen smoking cigarettes at the marina as they are let out once a day to cause damage and relax on customers boats.
The owner of this company can often be seen crashing your money at Portimao raceway as pony tailed baboons can not control a company race car properly and have to spend your cash somehow.
The top baboons reside in Lagos they can put your craft on the internet for a small fortune.
Beware of Bildge Water All Garbage they are the worst you can do for yourself.
