How good is everyone at using descriptive words. We all have our own special words we use. Mite be fun to try them out on others,

What would the words “ a confused sea” mean to someone else, to me it means being hit by waves from many different side with no pattern to follow.

You find “Pot hole” at sea, when you come off a wave and suddenly there is no water underneath you, and then bang you have found the water again,

Will think of others,
Do you have any, [ please think of kim if replying to this post]/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I like the weather forecasts, read in that inimitable English understated style. In particular, "Imminent", "Soon" and "Later"

They mean bugger-all to anyone who isn't in the know on such things.

The most recent analysis of the weather is normally 5-6 hrs before the broadcast, hence the need to use some general terms..

You shoud read the following:

Imminent = within 6 hrs of time of issue
Soon = within 6 to 12 hrs of time of issue
Later = withing 12 to 24 hrs of time of issue

There are other general terms used for the speed of the weather systems, Visibility and Speed of changes in barometic pressure. Not ideal, I know, but to keep the synopsis short, they need to do somethng, and this appears to be an international standard for all weather forecasts...

This was ment to try and wake peaple up a bit, to get them thinking about the terms they have for things in everyday life,
eg, "going down the street"
"saunter"
"Able down the Hamble"

names for things that they use, that may not be understood by others.try it,

Hi Divemaster - thanks for this. I do actually know all the synoptic stuff, I was referring to others, namely a friend of mine, who hadn't been on a boat before Saturday, when he came out with me and was asking what all these words on my VHF set meant. Cheers.
