Full disclaimer

Now if I was a Kingfisher, a Wool or a Worth I wouldn't need to buy in the sale! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'd be quick, in our local (small) Poole store they were going fast, as were Brandy/whisky/cherry liqueur/Irish cream choccies at Coop for 49p/box.....hic

But do you actually need a Dremel type thingy, or a soldering iron collection of bits you will never use. If you actually really wanted such a thing, wouldn't you rather buy a good long-lasting one. Sales goods are often manufactured as such, and don't need to last too long; just to the next sale
Safer to buy boaty things from a good supplier at the boat show.
Actually we bought our new batteries locally and allowed the guy to give us Boat Show discount, so saving him the cost of delivery. Kind of us really/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And you accused ME of being patronising in another post? I bow to your superior knowledge of course Becky, so I don't expect then that the 5 year Woolworths warranty they came with is at all worth having? These are tools sold under Woolworths Workshop label, they may not be as good as Chinese made Black & Deckers but they will do the jobs I have in mind for them I'm quite sure. For the record I agree that it isn't good practice to buy cheap tools, but in this case I couldn't justify a Dremmel for a few small jobs but £20 for this one and £12 for soldering irons that will ALL be used is good value - IMHO of course.

BTW I would NOT have wasted money on very expensive AGM batteries either, but heck, what do I know, at least you made Barden's day! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Now, when I were a self employed chippy I got some decent power tools cause it were tax deductable and also I thought it would be more reliable. Not so, when they burnt out i got the Homebase cheapies and chuck them when they've had it. I do have standards - spend more on a chisel than I do on a cordless drill.
Thanks for the tip - I think I'll go have a look and decide not to buy.

Totally agree, Spuddy. My power tools get used intermittently but by buying budget range I can have the right tool for any particular job and they do last quite well. The trick, as you say, is to know when to spend top dollar and when not. Chisels are a good example. One of the best cheap power tools I ever bought was a chop saw though at the time I felt very ashamed of myself as a hand saw had always been good enough. The time it saves on odd bits of joinery and it's accuracy is amazing.

I wasn't really being patronising. It is just a general principle that a man always wants more tools. I bought HWMBO a lovely Dremel because as far as I could tell it is the ONLY tool he doesn't yet possess. And to hear you could get them cheaper wasn't nice. But at least the Dremel should be good. I have used it already /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. But he hasn't!
I am sure your purchases will be long-lasting and useful. But to be honest, did you really NEED them?
Mind you, if it was clothes........./forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My philosophy on tools has always been never to borrow them, because if I need something once I will surely need it again. I have some small crazing on deck that I want to open up and fill, one of those jobs that get put off each year. The multitool with flexidrive and little tools like you would have in your dentist's surgery seems perfect for the job so if I only use it just once it will have justified the £20 price tag but I am sure it will earn it's keep elsewhere too. Soldering irons are essential tools both at home and on board and I carry gas, 12v and 220v ones, but I didn't have a powerful triggergun one (300W) and the small hand one I had was 30 years old and getting past it. I had also many times wished I had the small clamp/hold & magnify gizmo for delicate work, so that too was a bonus in a cased set for just £12. So yes they will get used and they will join the on board tool kit which includes many things from cordless and corded drills, sockets sets, woodworking tools etc etc. There are not many jobs I cannot do on board because of lack of tools or materials and many many times other boatowners have been pleased to make use of them, I believe in self reliant cruising as far as I can.

I'm sure hubby will enjoy his Dremel which very probably is a better piece of kit than the copycat one I have but in any case his will have sentimental value added!

Happy New Year

Robin
