Help! My two-year-old grandson (or, rather, his mother) asked me to find him a toy wooden boat (like Grand-dad's) for Christmas and I promised to do so but I can't find one for love nor money. Only scruffy plastic stuff in the shops and I can't see anything on the net. It needs to be a foot or so long, nicely built, rather simple, the sort of thing you launch in a tide pool or a dam in the sand and pull around on a piece of line. Any thoughts that could save my life and reputation?

Skipper Yachts

are what you want. Made just round the corner from here; all toyshops in Suffolk have them; a quick Google shows that they don't seem to have a website. Annoyingly though we see the owners of the business in Church on Sundays and know them to chat to I cannot remember their name or phone number.

They come in a range of sizes; all of them sail properly.

Alex has one which has done sterling service, tied to Mirelle with long length of line or on the model yacht pond.

Not 100% wood but the deck is wood.

Some chandleries keep the Skipper Yachts Mirelle refers to. There are still a couple in London I think?

Thanks...

...for all your help on this. In case some other grand-dad is having trouble the website is skippertoys.com

I think I'm going to get one of those pop-pop boats and put it under the tree just for me.

Star Yachts....

... was the name of the solid wooden yachts with white cotton sails and a steel fin keel which were around when our kids were small (& maybe when I was a kid too!) Many a spark of enthusiasm for sailing was kindled by one of those little beauties - and the sailed surprizingly well too.

They started at SY0 which was about seven inches long and went up to SY12 which was enormous. From (I think) SY6 upwards they were named (SY6 was "Endeavour") The most popular was SY3 which had a small bowsprit. We have one of those up in the loft but I wouldn't part with it, sorry. Three were sold at auction a couple of months ago for £50.

Re: Star Yachts....

Yes indeed, I still have the seven hull up in the loft, requires re-rigging, maybe it is time I got around to it.

I loved sailing it when I was a kid, always wished they had included a rudder though, to many wades into the middle of the boating pool to retrieve it as I remember.

Re: Thanks...

The one specially advertised as coming in a "plain brown box" sounds interesting for us grownups to put under the Xmas tree for ourselves!

I dont know if this will help but if you go on e-bay and type in sailing, on page one and five there are three small yachts for sale.
