I have a 53ft LOA yacht built in 1938 by Gustav Plym, designed by Knut Reimers. The mast is alloy and I am preparing to replace that with a wooden mast to the original design. I am toying with the idea of making the mast myself (21.350 metres long). I have a workshop/garage space where the work can be done. Anyone out there who has done such a job with advice? Alternatively does anyone know of a reliable company in the UK who would take the job?

Hi Charles,
Wooden Boat, an American magazine had an article on mast construction a few years ago. The mast was made up of 8 lengths glued together with epoxy. The end result is hollow mast that is lightweight and really strong. The lengths of wood have to be squared along one side and beaked with a 45° inlet along the opposit side. by assembling the eight lenghts, squared end put into the beak of the previous one, one ends up with a cilinder (8x45°=360°). Its also possible to build a mast that is oval. The trick was to get the relative dimensions of breadth en depth right. Woodenboat has a website with a forum, maybe someone there can help you along fruther

The search facility on the Wooden Boat forum has been broken for some time.

Don't worry; just post a question on the "Building/repair" section.

If your alloy mast is fairly heavyweight, I may have a mate who is interested in buying it.

[/ QUOTE ] Further to the above, a thank you to those who have helped with advice already. At the risk of asking too much, are there any views on the merits/demerits of the following timbers - Sitka Spruce; Pine; others? Thanks
