The threads about once-proud wooden boats being left to decay have been slightly depressing, I thought I'd come clean and admit to my foolishness!

To cut a long story, etc...

I've bought a Waarschip. It had been stood in Andy Seedhouse's yard for 6 years, had 2 owners and very little work done in that time. It was in a sorry state, in fact on my first visit I spent 2 minutes looking before walking away.

Some research, some advice, and a lot of thinking later I went back and did a good "root around" inside and out, then bought it.

On the ad it was being sold as a 24 footer, talking to Andy it turns out that he thought that they only made a 24 footer! It was in fact a Waarschip 570 of (just short of) 20ft and built in 1976, less wood to replace then!

Contact with the owners forum has produced loads of advice, some good, some not so....... and hundreds of pics of other Waarschip rebuilds. Plenty of offers of drawings or tech info.

The hull has been holed near the gunwhale on the st'b side and the transom has been replaced with non-marine ply. That's about the extent of work need to the hull. The deck seems to be 90% good and can be repaired. The coachroof is now in the firewood pile.

Sat on my drive, I've got my winter (and probably summer!) project.

Waarships

Great boats. I sailed a lot on my uncles' in the eighties. He still has it. Another project for somebody I imagine....

Good luck. I too have been saving my old boat, but it wasnt really too bad to start with.

You might struggle to pull that trailer with a Micra though /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I knew it was hard going towing it back to Leicester! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks for the support, I think I'm going to need it!

Donald, after seeing her for the first time I got some advice from people who had sailed Waarschips, like you all were positive about their sailing abilities, it's one of the main reasons I was convinced to take her on.

There was bloke up near Taunton bought a Waarschip, can't remember if it was a 24 or one like yours, but it was in a terrible mess when he got it. He just wanted a trailer sailor, to tote about here and there in the summer, anyway, he completely gutted it, made it into a flush decker, made the inside as neat as a pin, but nowt in it except for a pipe cot, and single ring cooker, and a bucket to pee in!

Went like the clappers he said, I saw the boat a couple of times, and it really did look great, looked a smidgen like an "Eboat" really...............naaaaaaa, not them bloody great jerry thingies!

It's crossed my mind to change things drastically, specially now that the coachroof is on the bonfire!
I still fancy weekends away, plenty of spots to drop anchor round the Wash for a night out.

I'n't the Wash a bit thin for a fin keeler? don't know? never sailed there.

Still I do envy you in a way, almost a clean slate to work with, and with some decent sails she will fly I reckon! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There's the odd bit of sand here and there. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was convinced by having sailed a long-keeler there, if we did touch bottom a bit of heeling usually had us on our way. A bilge-keeler would have to put the kettle on and get the bottom scraped while he waited for the tide!
A lift-keel would have been nice, but couldn't find one cheap enough. Did look at a couple of Kestrels, but even more work than the Waarschip.....

I think you have something there, I own a bilge keeler, but wouldn't if I didn't live in N.Devon. Mind you, I aint adverse to putting the kettle on, and waiting for the tide, (as long as they is rising) otherwise, could be a long tea break! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have often looked at Andy Seedhouse's website, looks a great place? I also think that Woodbridge would be worth a few days.

I hope you keep us informed of your progress with your Waarschip, it will be interesting to see what you do with her, and make a change from all the waffle on these forums about rich mens toys! (Oooops, me strings are showing!) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm a lazy git when it comes to keeping a record of work I've done. It usually ends up with a "before" and "after" pic! I've promised to at least try and keep a photographic record this time and have taken dozens already. Might even set up a blog.....

..but probably not!

I've heard Andy's place described as a "boat graveyard", others love the place! I could spend days there....
There are a few Woodbridge locals on here who know the area far better than me, I just went down to a wedding and came back with a boat!

Hello Ken, well, before and after pics are good, as they say, a picture is often worth a thousand words. Though to be honest, I am blowed if I could be bothered to mess about putting any up on these forums myself, too much hassle.

You could always send me some to smiffy@onetel.com if you was of a minds to?

Charlie.

Hi Paul. My old fishing boat, Tommy, is moored in Boston, just downriver from the swing bridge.
I've been doing some sailing with someone you know, I thought I'd mentioned it to you somewhere.....
Andy Smith.
I'll be keeping Tommy until the Waarschip is ready, who knows when!

Almost forgot.....

£250.

Hi Ken. Saw quite a few Waarships over in Holland when we restored our last boat over there. They are a pretty boat and the Dutch we spoke to rated them very highly. I've also started a new project and at a mere 34yrs old she's our newest yacht to date, Only one slight fly in the ointment she's..................... GLASS!!!!!!! Is she a classic? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Now running for cover with head definately below the parapet. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Got a 38 year old Westerly Nomad, they tell me she is a classic, mind you, they probably lied as well! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
