I'm thinking of staining my rudder stock [made of marine ply] a darker colour, can I use normal wood stain, and then use varnish or Deks Olje?

You can use woodstain and then a conventional varnish, although you may find it difficult to get an even colour. Alternatively you could use a tinted woodstain finish such as you might use on domestic external doors. Will probably outlast traditional varnish but may not have the same gloss.

That's what I did. Looks fine if you brush out very evenly. Otherwise patchy.

Yes. Good stuff but a lifetime supply if you just use it for the rudder.

Used Ronseal woodstain applied with a sponge on ply panels, went on quite evenly
