Hi,

I need to make a couple of cupboard doors for our 1986 Beneteau and was scratching my head about where to get some suitable wood. Does anyone have any idea please? See attached photo. It's pearwood veneer apparently but anything near would be good (it's for in the heads).

Would solid wood be ok?

cheers!

Toby

One of the best places to start is your local Travis Perkins outlet.

Even if they don't have it, (stocks reduced these days since the building industry went down the pan) they can usually order something suitable, and from my experience, one of their favoured suppliers (in the Midlands at least, don't know about further North) especially for hardwood and hardwood laminates is a company in Nottingham:

Brooks Bros (Formerly Fitchett & Woollacott), Willow Road, Nottingham T. 0115 822 3766.
Don't worry that they're nowhere near you, they delivered a single 8x4 sheet of 6mm ash faced ply to my house direct. Travis Perkins will also arrange this via them if you ask.

Hope this helps

thanks for those. I've asked for a quote from pbplywood and will check out Travis Perkins.

I've never had much luck cutting plywood but will try the masking tape idea on the cut line...

There are many traders selling veneers on Ebay. According to an article in PBO last year it is very easy to do. I can send you a copy of the article if you PM me your e-mail address. I have found very little ply in regular outlets such as B&Q and Jewsons that is anywhere near the quality you would be looking for. Robbins will sell something to you but it will be an arm and a leg at minimum.

I've generally bought stuff from my local independent timber merchant. They don't have a huge range of boatbuilding woods, but they can manage faced ply and solid sapele in various sizes, which I've been perfectly happy with. May be as simple as looking for "timber" in yellow pages (or Internet equivalent).
