Wood Cutting...

Agree that both the Record and Elektra would be really ideal and with a large throat you could do some serious work when required.

I have one of these in my home workshop. https://www.datapowertools.co.uk/product.php?category=Scheppach&product=SCH73190913

Not bad piece ofkit but possibly the Record of similar size is preferable. I'm not as familiar with the Elektra, but a quick scan through the wood working sites will throw up the answers.

I have both these to compliment the home workshop and to transport to the boat in a small trailer if required.

Both a bit 'toy town' but set up carefully they all do all the work required for my boat maintenance and more.
I'm more disappointed with the Makita saw than anything. I have a small drill/screwdriver pack of theirs which is superb but this saw bench is a bit sloppy in its fence slides and adjustment.

No I disagree.... especially if he is considering starting to acquire small machinery, Christmas is coming remember!.....we all have to start somewhere and with common sense and the will to look at research e.g. YouTube etc... then I reckon he has a go.

yes you are right with reservations the blade guides need careful setting up with a really good blade and it is a skill worth cultivating but 40 by 20 into 40x10 whhichwill be 40 by 8 planed in practical terms, allowing for beginners wobbles is ok for a few boards but if a lot of boards some disappointment might be forthcoming if he only gets 40 by 6
