I'm down to bare wood and waiting for inspiration. Inspire me!! PLEASE can we all chip in from our experience here - what do YOU use on your cabinsides?

It seems like the right time of year to be getting as huge a response as possible - to finally debate what is the best, gives the best value for money and has the greatest longevity.

Whatever your thoughts on whatever product, please add it to the debate for the good of all!

Thanks,

Tim

I used Sadolin Natural on my cabin sides of my Finesse this time after stripping all the varnish. I was a bit uneasy when I first applied it as it seemed a bit dark but it went on very easily and I have grown to like it. The product has a slight silky sheen which I find quite pleasingand also gives a nice, even colouration. This will be the first season with it on so I will be interested to see how it stands up to the weather. Hard wearing areas and high visibility bits like the cokpit lockers, upstands and bulkhead, I have kept varnished, as is the rubbing strake. This latter I might strip next year if I am still pleased with it. Overall, I would rate it a success. I decided to do it following an article in PBO where two other owners coincidentally of Finesses had also used a similar product. Their boats stayed on moorings all year round and the bright work still looked good after 2 years exposure. Hope this helps and I could send some pictures of mine if it would be useful

Kind regards

Mike

We use sikkens cetol. Not from a swindelery but from a normal paint type warehouse. Works very well on our aft deck that we cross every time we go on / off and also its in the med sun.

Dulux, other wise i use the least costly supermarket paint for top sides and do it once out and again during the season afloat to freshen her up. I have to admit Dulax is well worth the price and keeps for two seasons, but still the twice a year solution looks better by winter
For varish i use epifanies.

Most peeps are looking for help and inspiration, as you are, and not all are registered, or will post.

The 296 includes an aweful lot of search engines, and people looking in from computers other than their normal, so not 296 helpfull peeps have looked in.

I've looked, but have no helpful comments, and this will apply to 95% of peeps who look

For what its worth I use Blakes Woodseal (but get the leaflet first and put two holes in the bottom of the tin, decant enough for the job and seal holes with tape) then either Blakes varnish (at least three coats) or paint (metallic primer, two undercoats (at least) and then a marine top coat)

Expensive but it lasts a long time. I used Duilux Weathershield in the cabin but it went yellow in a season. Marine paint maintains its finish for much longer.

Do the other 296 of you prefer bare wood?

some of us don't have cabins!

#FWIW I use Craig and Rose paint on the topsides. If its good enough for the Forth Rail bridge, its good enough for me. Regardless of what type of paint is used it needs repainted every year, due to the amount of bump and grind in our crouded harbour.
