Wonder varnish

Does anyone recall the article some time ago in mby about a wonderful new varnish that only needed two coats instead of ten? Or was it just a dream? I would like to varnish the teak cappings on my Aquastar as they are drying out badly in the med sun, perhaps this is not the best answer? Any comments appreciated.tks

Don't know where you are berthed in the Med but if you experience the typical temperatures that we do in Mallorca do not use varnish or Semco.

Just clean the teak using the Wessex teak cleaning products and give a light sanding.

When all clean then apply clear (not coloured) teak oil.

The teak will need several applications over the summer but this will take minutes to apply with a small piece of rag.

Varnish is only good for the UK climate when teak oil is not as effective.

(All above info thanks to a jfm post in a previous thread)

A friend of mine has an Aquastar 48 in Marmaris in Turkey which has been there circa 8 years. he has always varnished his cap rails over the gunnels, same basic design as yours.

I emailed him today and this is his reply.:

Yes still varnished.

I’ve tried a few including a two pack (disastrous and a nightmare to remove) but Epifanes wood finish gloss has been the most reliable and easiest to work with.

From bare I apply five coat. There is no need to rub down between coats but I think there is a maximum time you can leave between coats without keying the surface. Then I put another coat on in late summer having just keying the surface a bit. The next year I put another coat on in the spring and another in the summer. I reckon to go back to bare about every three years.
Hope this helps.
