Watching the race, the crew was doing some rather energetic technique that involved hanging onto the wire by her hands and some sort of hip press ups. It didn't appear to make the boat move or pump the mast.
Does anyone know what it was all about?

The medal race is on iPlayer: day13, I think. There's an aerial shot as they come off the start line where you can see what effect the pumping has.
