Upstream of Bourne End, Sunday morning. More rag & sticks behind the tree on the right of picture as well. I was safely ashore walking dog so no problem, but what if I wasn't....

Drop anchor, hoist anchor ball, let them pass and fend off with boat hook?

Always looks like mayhem and they know they can turn on a sixpence which you will probably find un-nerving.

Just keep going at an even pace and keep to the right side of the fairway and you will usually find they give way - they trust us even less than we trust them :D

Trick is to not look'em in the eye, look like your not paying attention, not going to slow down or change course, they avoid you then.

Nah ... I positively LURV looking them in the eye ! And when they point to their sails and say 'Sail, Sail' I point to my hull and say 'STEEL, STEEL' and , as you all know, I am constrained by my draft :D

Looks like it's nearly curtains for matey in the blue hull on the far left .

He wasn't the only one. Plenty of near misses and the odd bump. What chance do we stand if they can't even stay out of the way of one another.

On previous occasions, I've foillowed Boatone's advice - far right, slow but steady speed. Either my boat has a magic invisible gelcoat, or I just keep coming across those who take the p&&s as invariably I always need to do something else, including a quick touch of revs - which is the most enjoyable as it gives them a wave or two to think about. I think it's JHR's approach from now on - full ahead both and see em scatter!

And people think crusing on the river is a piece of cake!

I was feeding the ducks at Garricks Lawn the other day , and i saw a barge 'Thomas H' heading downstream ...

The sailors got out of the way of that quickly enough i can tell you ... :D

Big snub nosed thing it was ..
