We've often had a little stab at countering the (often silly) scenarios our Mobo friends find themselves in ... usually of their own doing ... so ...

Wot know Skip?

Your boat is a Fin keel Sadler 29, tiller steer, slab reefing main (all controls at the mast) and roller genoa. There is just 2 of you onboard.
You're midway on passage between two headlands - and around 7Nm from nearest shore. It is a close fetch, so a quick run has seen some cracking sailing, however the wind is picking up and the current full sail is getting too much, so you decide to take a reef in.
You carry on helming whilst your crew eases the main and then goes forward to the mast to put the reef in. 1/2 way through the reefing procedure you get caught by an unexpected wave (probably a passing mobo /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) and crew topples over the side - he's only been 1/2 a plonker because although he is wearing his lifejacket, he didn't clip a lifeline on...
You're now left with a mainsail with cleated halyard, but reefing lines loose, full genoa and no tiller pilot ... WNS?!

Throw the the dahnbuoy over the side, push the tiller to leeward and let the mainsheet out.
Take an eyeball bearing on where he is.
Roll up the genny.
Go and pick him up, main only or motor on.

Immediate tack to hove to.

sail back to the casualty hove to, passing close, get the MOB gear into his hands.
If you can start the engine quickly reverse can be used to hold station and secure the casualty alongside, putting it into neutral before the casualty is in danger from the prop.

Otherwise after giving the gear to the MOB start the engine, furl the genoa and aproach the casualty into the wind.
If this fails, and I'm the only person left on board, I'd now send a mayday. With only one person left it's a judgement call based on experience levels etc, and for me it's after one failed attempt, or with a casualty alongside that is too much to get back aboard.

And then you do, of course, have a pre-existing plan to recover a casualty from the water suited to your boat. Don't you....?

But most important first step is to stop sailing away from the MOB.

RTFQ - you're on the tiller ... you could make a leap for the mast, but then you'll probably be MOB with your mate!!

Get back to MOB and jump in to save him as he has not inflated his jacket and is drowning, then get back on board...... aaaahhhh - better start again - sounds rather like a film I once saw.

Need some more information on this one. Has the crew been screwing your wife, or have you been screwing his ? *****

Sorry thought this was the lounge !
