I had a trip up the Colne yesterday. Just through the tidal barrier is a new development with a 'jetty' sticking out into the river. Is this a place to come alongside? It didn't look very welcoming but I didn't see any No Mooring signs. Is there any water there? Somewhere to stop for a swift pint at the top of the tide would be great.

Blimey it was nice yesterday even if the wind did go on strike.

probably v silly question, but is Rowhedge at the top of the Colne? I quite fancy a meander up there.

The sailing club pontoon just downstream of the tide barrier seems to be the place to stop off for a pint. The club's website claims that deep draft boats can dry out there but I have never been brave enought to try!

I ventured as far as Rowhedge a couple of years back where we rafted up against the pontoon by the pub for a quick foray ashore.

About a couple of hours. Going up the Colne on a nice day is really beautiful - well until you get past Rowhedge. The Hythe at Colchester is - well - industrial

We sail up there from Brightlingsea twice a year for the Regatta in a Brightlingsea One Design, race up a few beers and a nice cruise back. At Rowhedge you just moore along side the docks, the pub is a few seconds away. From memory Wivenhoe had free beer the last couple of years! The club at Wivenhoe is new, the old club was pass the lock gates and more in the town, up a very steep set of stairs which was fine before you had a beer but difficult after!

Yep, have done the 'trundle' up to Rowhedge a couple of times. I have a bilge keeler so i'm a little spoilt for this kind of trip. I pick up the inbound tide to take me in.

Have stopped for drinks and nibbles at the pub at Rowhedge (can't think of its name off the top of my head) Does very nice meals.

The sail back to St Lawrence bay was 'interesting' at 10pm.

I got there and back in one tide from Bradwell leaving 3.5 before HW and back 2 after - which means against the tide in the Blackwater but with it in the Colne.

I'm tempted to have a squeeze all the way up to The Hythe at some point. Just so i've been there. Can't imagine i'll be desperately keen in staying there too long.

Jetty has been there for ages - used to be part of Cooks Yard now part of the new housing development - ToyTown2, ToyTown1 is on the old port
I used to occassionally tie up on it when my mooring was opposite. Not too sure if the new locals are friendly in that development, but as prevoiusly said the Sailing club just before the barrier is a beter bet, and about 2 mins walk from the Jetty.
Rowhedge is easy - just tie up on the wall by the green , but in both places they do dry out

A Rowhedge FYI... the repairs to the wall north of the Anchor have been completed, so you can now moor there....

Spent a night on the Wivenhoe sailing club pontoon a while ago, in a bilge keel boat. When it dried out, we tilted about 10 degrees. The fin keeler next to us dried bolt upright!
Club members made us very welcome, it's a nice place to go.

No, you can go up to Colchester and you will get an unobstructed view of the local sewerage works, followed by warehouses and ugly development - don't bother - and now that the Council no longer dredge it, it is getting silted up
