Soltron. I have just checked my fuel water seperators and the first couple of centimetres in the bottom of the plastic cup i used to drain some fuel off was taken up with a cream coloured gel like substance, had topped the tanks off and added some Fuelset solution before laying her up and have used her twice since she went back in, its the first time ive checked since October any ideas, is it the dreaded bug ?

Re: Fuelset

No, I don't think it is : I think the bug is more blacky lurgified. Creamy stuff sounds like a fine emulsion of water and fuel, so run it off and kep checking. As for curing it, the probs I had with fuel starvation happened before and after using a load of Fuelset. In other words Soltron might have cured it, but Fuelset definitely didn't.

Avoiding the bug

tcm, did you identify which fuel station you picked up the bug from or at least have suspicion? Are there any fuel stations in SoF which one should definitely avoid and, conversely, ones that are known for keeping clean fuel?
What about prices? Do they vary? SWMBO caught sight of credit card slip when I refuelled in LaNap recently and went ballistic about how the same amount would have bought a week's holiday in Tenerife

Please can I just give some helpful advice to any one with fuel problems......

Any one who drains off an unfamiliar substance from their tank filter bowls etc please put it in a bottle that has not been used before, seal it and put the date and where and when on the side of the bottle.

Then if any thing comes of it or you want it analysed it can be done easily and a description of the contents can be given over the net or phone if necessary.

These bottles can be bought from Boots. I see so many cases where people say they drained this or saw that and threw away or didint take a sample and want advice on it that it makes it nearly impossible to verify exactl what it is. If you are worried take a sample, ther are enough of us on here who are willing to look at it for you.

Re: Avoiding the bug

No i didn't identify, not do i have a suspicion, really. It could have been early season stuff from lanap. I have reasonable faith in fuel tankers with filters, and you wd be welcome to use our berth when we are out for a day as a tanker can get right up behind and sells at .81€ a litre.

As for swmbo getting steamed up, best is to put her in charge of the money, then you don;t need to see the credit card slips, tho sounds as though there are different dynmaics. For exmapl,e my swmbo would happily pay £500 quid to guarantee that we never went to tenerife ever again, this being yet another rubbish pklace recommended by her stupid dad and his low-life. I mean wife

Your having a larf......

Come on Dom, I don't wish to be uncharitable but if someone sends you stuff for analysis we all know what you're going to say.

"nasty case of x in your y, double dose with Slutron" ;-))

Thanks for the offer, tcm. € 0.81/l is certainly cheaper than € 0.90/l that I paid in La Nap

Re: Your having a larf......

I had this milky stuff in the filters in one of the vans. One of the boys took it and heated it gently over a primus stove. The water evaporated off and left the deisel. I wouldn't rcommend it though. It just proved that there was water in the tank.

Re: Your having a larf......

Are you implying that no matter what it is I will say it is a nasty case of x and to double dose it with Soltron? Nah I didnt think that you did!

What I was saying is that, and not just me as there are others here who could easily give you a diagnosis, if you keep it then someone can tell you what it is rather than guessing.

Dont judge everyone by your own standards, there are some people on here that do things for others for free and I know there are a few forum members out there who can vouch for me as far as that is concerned.

But thanks for the vote of confidence any way!
