wish me luck

Here is a bit I of video of us crossing from Dartmouth to Falmouth a couple of weeks ago , westerly swell about 4 foot and blowing north westerly 4 . Boats are Squadron 52 and a Princess 42 . Good luck with the trip but its just as enjoyable stopping at different ports and chilling rather than bashing yourselves and the boat up .

Surely it's the right thing to do? Get advice!
Absolutely. There is a wealth of knowledge on here and people very willing to help.

As regards forecasts, I use the Met Office inshore for the general synopsis but it does lack detail. For that I use Wind Guru which I've always found to be pretty accurate.

There's a bit more movement in a smaller boat.
This was from the S28 a couple of years back, making good progress across Lyme Bay, also probably about an F4.

Well I set of at about 0930 from gosport got about 15 miles towards the needles. Stopped the boat having taken it on the nose for about 45 mins, looked at SWMBO and though it's only going to get worse once we get out of the solent. So I ran for the hills, well in this case gosport marina. Discretion being the best part of valour. As was said. Always another day. Will look at the weather again and hopefully go for it tomorrow. As for why post. Its my longest ever trip where I have planned and not been with more experienced sailors. Hence the need for some encouragement and advice from more experienced people. Surley that's why we have these places. We were all relatively inexperienced at one time. Surley it's the right thing to do? Get advice!

Good call Lionel, far better to get in and comfortable than push things...its great to read the post and see how you get on, I wish that I had used the forum when we did the trip the first time; when I was warned about portland race by a guy in the marina I told Ann that he was probably talking about some kind on sailing regatta race that was going on that day!

Looking forward to hearing how things go tomorrow.....

+1 with the call as I was once informed its pleasure boating if its not then don't go. Thats not to say you don't push yourself but it should be a pleasurable challenge.
Also consider your 'crew' if they get a bad experience they might not come with you again (or let you go)

Got to love the british weather. Blowing this morning 4-5. Then a massive rain storm. And now not even enough wind to blow a smell of a fart away ?

If the weather looks nice for this evening you could always consider a run down to Yarmouth or Lymington. Gives you a change of scenery and it means an hour less for your next leg anyway.

Got back from Weymouth around 1030 this morning , I would say you made a good call, Falmouth to Torquay Saturday was interesting
I am guessing Jo and I wouldn't have fancied that trip very much  Hope you both enjoyed the trip and thanks for smoothing out the sea for us:D

Sorry guys and gals update. I got as far as Weymouth. Set of from portsmouth at 0815. No problems in the solent very nice and smooth with bright but cold weather. Solent to swanage ok still bright a bit rougher as you would expect. From swanage to Weymouth was not nice. Wife was not happy bunny. I now officially know what a squall is. About 6 miles out of Weymouth the heavens opened wife shouting she wants to go in. Visibility down to a few hundred meters and me saying Weymouth is in front of us. She was not moving anywhere when we got to Weymouth in glorious sunshine. You got to love british weather I have some videos and pictures of the rain and Weymouth which I will post when I have better Internet. Hoping to push on to falmouth tomorrow. Total travel time. 3 hrs 45

Good news was I have only burnt 30 ltrs an hour. So I think that is working out at 1.8 ltrs per nautical mile.

Thanks for all your help. More to follow on my little adventure.

Lionel

Well done Lionel.

I remember when one of my boats had a for sale sign up when it arrived in Weymouth ! Down by teatime though.

May you have some decent weather for the rest of your trip west.

Should be much better tomorrow. Right decision made to stay in Weymouth, Lyme Bay would not have been pleasant.

Looks as though you will be in for some very pleasant summer weather from this weekend onwards, should make your stay in Falmouth a good one.

Well I made it. Took 7.15hrs from Weymouth to here. Managed to take the inner channel for the portland race. And then the first half of Lyme bay crossing was a bit rough but as the journey went on it got better, managed to to fulfill one of my bucket list wishes as we had dolphins swim with us. It was just amazing, managed to get some video which I will post later. From start point light house across to falmouth was a bit rough again especially to the eddy stone lighthouse. Was down to 10 knts for a lot of it, luckily again the water got better and managed to take it up to 20 knts again. Overall it took longer than I expected, was planning on 18 knts cruising speed managed an average of just over 16 knts. So not too bad. The big lesson learnt for me always add 15% onto the planning time. I will sleep well tonight as we did not get here and settled in till 1800 having left at 10. Damage to the boat was my microwave door hanging off and some screws have come out of my cabin door slider. Hope fully tomorrow I will post some of the pictures on

Glad the journey went well, good on you :encouragement:
Im hoping on Falmouth for our fortnight hol in 1 weeks time, approaching from the opposite direction to youself. Fingers crossed for good weather.

We were diving a few miles out near Beer, suspect I saw you passing quite a way further out around 11-15.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday!
