Realise this is a very common question, so forgive me, but need some help. Setting up new B&GF/DSC V50 radio into an older boat with a Garmin 120 GPS (@1995). I need to get the radio to listen to GPS information for DSC location etc.

Current GPS cable goes from passive GPS antenna to Garmin 120. From Garmin 120 out I have the following (would have posted photo but not allowed attachments): red, black ( both going to power), blue (NMEA out according to manual), brown ( NMEA in), white (NMEA optional ground), yellow (alarm low), green (no connection).

From B&G radio (again powered separately) I have the NMEA 0183 cable going out with wires as follows: shield (NMEA 0183 4800 in), brown (NMEA 0183 4800 in), green (marked NMEA out GPS-), yellow (marked NMEA out GPS+), grey (NMWEA 0183 in), black (AIS), and white (AIS) + blue and grey (both N/C)

Which attaches to which to get GPS signal to radio? One suggestion is blue 120 to grey V50 only. But I'm thoroughly confused by it all. Hindsight would have bought me a radio with integrated GPS of course.....And do I need to worry about grounding?

Also whilst here. Will need to replace Garmin at some stage and other electronics ( all nearly obsolete). Read up about NMEA 2000 and seemed simple, but then was told better/more reliable with NMEA 0183. Views for someone starting from scratch ( with a 28ft boat, modest budget and limited technical expertise). Thank you.

It may depend on the age of the gps. My cobra radio required a version of nmea 183 that was later than my old gps. I bought a garmin hh gps with mounting bracket for ~£100.

I can’t help with the cable queries as both my gps came with a cable and plug that fitted the socket on my radio. Lucky or what.

Blue and white on Garmin...
To
Brown and shield.

You will find the output/inputs on these devices are generally bulletproof and will tolerate all incorrect connections (at 12v) without damage.

GPS Blue to VHF Brown.
VHF shield connected to VHF 12v negative.

You need to make sure the GPS port protocol is set to NMEA 0183 2.0 4800 Baud. See page 46 in the manual.
