Wiring for tricolour and anchor light

I would like to change my masthead anchor light for a combined anchor and tricolour. I think there is a way of using the existing 2 core cable to the masthead to power both lights by incorporating a diode.

Can anyone advise please

I'm not sure if what you are asking can be done but it occurs to me that if you have to fit a new combination light then why don't you take the time and pulll a new 3-core cable through the mast and make your life easy?

There is a way using 2 diodes. Each bulb is connected betwen the two wires and each bulb is in series with a diode. The two diodes are connected opposite ways round. One conducts when wire A is positive, while the other diode is blocking. The other diode conducts when wire B is positive etc. The big drawback is that there's a significant volts drop across the diode when conducting, typically 0.7V. Add that to the volts drop in the cable and any poor contacts leads to a less than bright light at the masthead.
LEDs could be a good solution - they only work one way, and generally are happy about a modest reverse voltage.

Yes, you use one diode connected in series with each light. Then connect the pair in parallel as opposing directions. At the base use a change over switch to reverse the polarity.

As for the sense of complicating a safety device, just pull a new cable and do it properly.

Mounting 2 diodes and protecting them from induced voltage from lightning and vibration is too hard.

Thanks for the advice - it doesn't sound like such a good idea if it compromises the light from the tricolour.

I'll either put in a new cable or just exchange the anchor light for a tricolour and have a separate anchor light.
