I'm installing a 100w solar panel and MPPT charger. The wiring from the charger to battery is 12 AWG, I need to fit some crimp lugs to the battery end of the cable bit am confused as to what size I need for 12 AWG wire.

Crimp lugs seems to be sold using various ways of measuring them. I've found 12AWG is 4mm2 and 2.053 diameter according to a chart on the web. I need lugs with a 10mm hole for the connection to the battery. What size lugs do I need for the 12 AWG wire and should they be the heavy duty uninsulated type, or can I use the yellow insulated type?

A good table which compares AWG , with mm² cross section, mm and inch diameters and gives resistance ( which is useful for working out volts drop ) and max current ratings can be found on the "Engineering Toolbox" website at:- AWG Wire Gauges Current Ratings

What you want are "ring terminals" but I suspect to fit 10mm studs and wire as thin as 12AWG may be the problem. You may have to look further afield than the more common/ popular suppliers. Don't know if you will get heavy duty ones for such thin wire, but use them if you can.
Be sure to use decent crimping tool .

Loadsa other info on the site too

Ring Terminals - 3.0 - 6.0mm² Cable (Yellow)
