After drowning my starter I thought that I should get the existing float connected !! It was disconnected for some reason or other.
There is a 3 way switch ....manual/off/auto which used to work but now only works on manual. I cant understand how it will work with the float switch in the circuit. There are only 2 pairs of leads coming into the switch pos and neg from the battery and a pair which go straight to the pump. The leads to and from the float used to go to a junction box shared with the pump leads, this box fell to bits so I have no idea how the float is wired up. Any advice please.
( sorry about the 3 posts!!)
Regards to all

[/ QUOTE ] It sounds as though you have a double pole switch (one that switches both the +ve and -ve wires). That makes it slightly more complex than DogWatch's excellent diagram suggests, but only slightly. Connect the -ve from the switch to the pump -ve and you're away.
