Wireless Instruments

I don't believe so - the communication between the mast head and base station is two way - on TacTic, at least - I believe that the mast head unit goes into a low-power receive only mode when it it not hearing the base station.

Hard to say if the Garmin one does that, seems impossible to get any details from Garmin. It's a different setup to the TackTick ones, the Garmin displays are not wireless, just the masthead unit.

We’ve had Raymarine Wireless mast head and log/depth now for 4 years, work very well, last year added nmea 2k interface, found this increased signal report from mast head as it appears to also bridge the micronet signals.

Had a brief issue with mast head in 2nd month which raymarine sorted, faulty battery

Both displays are powered with 12v but sola does keep charged well with out, left them on with 12v off and were fully charged and working 2 months later.

When nmea2k interface fitted displays then act as MFD units and can show all data on network from plotter and compass etc, this is very useful and easy being wireless.

That is appalling longevity for a modern rechargeable cell. They must still be using NiCads. If that is correct, I wouldn't touch Garmin solar charging MHUs with a bargepole. :ambivalence:

Richard

Some of us are stuck with them as it came with the boat. However now done its 3 years and still working. think I will try to change it next year even if it is still working as we have a cherry picker comes into the club from time to time and it is only a 2 minute job once you have access.

Are you sure your Bavaria came with a wireless Garmin Wind transducer? Mine came as a factory-fit with a wired Garmin Wind transducer - no batteries involved.

Errrrr... You're missing the point. I didn't literally mean that they're fitting nicads. Doh!

You know what Richard, some days you can be a pain in the arse, what you said was

If you meant something different to what you actually said, i'm sorry to report that i can't read minds. Perhaps, in the future, you might be kind enough to type what you mean.

Jeez Paul....this is painful.

Can we just agree that any Garmin mast-head product fitted with rechargeable batteries which they say need changing every 3 years is simply a pile of unadulterated, unfit for purpose, crap?

That's straight forward Richard :encouragement:

I'm slightly saddened to say that i'm rather inclined to agree with you.

Now you have me thinking - I really have not checked so you may well be right. I just assumed it was wireless.

I thought that wireless instruments had a small built-in solar panel these days? The batteries would still need changing but possibly only every 10 years and my wired MHU only lasted that long anyway.

I'll try and find a link.

"These days"? Our Tacktick instruments which we bought in 2006 have solar panels and batteries and they are still the original batteries which get charged up on a sunny window sill in 2-3 hours each Spring after being packed away all Winter.

I fitted Tacktick wireless instruments over 12 years ago - basically when the children were too big to get into tiny spaces to run the wires- the originals are still going strong. In that time I have replaced the masthead unit once. I would definitely recommend going wireless.

Same experience, twelve years old. Still the original masthead unit (and battery), but the bearing had to be replaced after six years. Done for free by the dealer!
