Wireless connections on board

I have a normal car stereo on board.

We play music by plugging in iPods, iPads etc using an
Apple cable or an aux cable.

Is there a device anyone knows of that would plug into the stereo and allow us to do this wirelessly? Bluetooth somehow perhaps.

At home we use Sonos, which would be even better, but I do not want to run 220v just for that.

Any ideas?

I am happy to change the stereo itself if that helps. It's a Clarion so the same brand might make it easier to connect up.

You can get a device which plugs into the sender and transmits low power VHF to the car radio. There are all sorts of reasons why it may not work, yet it does on my boat despite the radio using the masthead aerial, which is theoretically out of range!

Rob.

Look up ipod vhf transmitter.

They work really well, but chew the ipod's battery.

Yes Belkin and others produce a system which transmits the output onto a clear VHF portion on your standard VHF consumer radio. This was in the days before Bluetooth was popular, and allowed MP3 players to be used wirelessly over the car radio. Worked for me, but the hardest part was when you move to another area, when blank frequencies suddenly get taken up

i had two diffent makes of transmitter any they were rubbish, so have stuck to the cable!

I bought a belkin tunecast for about £50 and the sound was so bad I was about to take it back - with a bit of volume it was unbearable - but I did solve it .... eventually....

The latest VHF transmitters do their own sound processing, I worked out it was processing the already processed output from the iPod. Resulting in garbage.

By switching the setting to off in the equaliser menu on the ipod, the output becomes raw and now it sounds excellent. No problemo.

If it's just for music being sent to your "stereo", they work a treat.

I have also had poor experience from small VHF transmitters and would not recommend them.

My car radio has integrated bluetooth and that works really well in the car when wirelessly connected to a blutooth music player (like the ones the kids use!).

I was thinking the same recently and stumbled upon the Kivic One. Now just waiting for it to be available.

It looks like it will allow Airplay from your Apple device apps and could easily be fixed in place so potentially a very neat solution.

Thanks. That looks perfect.

I too have tried the FM transmitters and have been very disappointed.

This is using WiFi Direct which is a technology struggling for a use-case. So far no Apple products support WiFi Direct

E.g. iPhone 4s has no WiFi Direct support.

This probably explains why the product isn't available ....

Hmm if this is the case then it's been missed in all the reviews, announcements by various tech magazines and live demos etc that show the product working.

Certainly seems as though they are delayed though, having expected a March launch in the US. Think I'll be sticking to my AUX in cable for now!

I have an io Play available from Halfords ( and other places) and it works fantastically I connect bluetooth to the ipod, iphone and ipad and can use it for music, video and phone calls through the fitted speakers. you can put your phone in a waterproof bag and leave it in your pocket while sailing which means you can select tracks etc. while on the go. I found the screen can be operated in the bag so never any risk of damage from water. I have a spare one that I could let you have as I had one in a work car that went back and the new one has one factory fitted. PM if interested.
