Wire to chain fitting?

Hi,

I am replacing the steering cables on a centre cockpit westerly with the typical whitelook pedestal.

Most fittings that I have seen between the chain and the cable are crimped eyes that need tooling that no DIY would have.

Does anyone have the typical bulldog clamps instead? If they are suitable in the quadrant I don't see why they wouldn't be suitable in the chain fitting.

There seems to be enough space in the hollow pedestal so they wouldn't get stuck into something.

Any thoughts or alternatives to the crimped option?

Thanks a lot to you all!

I'm going through that exercise right now.

I'm using a standard competition motor cycle chain that fits the Whitlock Pedestal chain sprocket. Now how do you attach the cable? If the cable is no bigger than 6mm diameter you don't have a problem as the cable will fit between the links and I imagine you could swage a loop

But what do you use if the cable is a larger diameter?

I have now swung away from SS cable and intend using Dyneema rope. I'll use Dyneema terminals at the quadrant

At the pedestal chain/rope end I'll have to use something like they have in this photo

When you say

That worries me a bit because the cables have to cross over within the pedestal and you wouldn't one catching on the other.

Several ways to make an eye in wire rope.

You could splice the eye or have a rigging swage open eye that could connect direct to the drive chain.

Thanks for the reply! the conduit crosses over in the engine bay, so the cables don't actually cross over inside the pedestal.

But thanks a lot for such a comprehensive answer :)
