Winterisation & Service

The worst part of all this is changing a spin on oil filter, and only because most engine manufacturers insist on mounting these horizontally. If they were vertical, it would be simple to get them off without making a mess. Does anyone know why the designers do this? Is it just to spoil my day?
 
Nope. Take the lid off, lift the filter element out, check it, put it back in if it is ok replace if it's not, top the reservoir up with clean diesel, put the lid back on and start up. They ain't cheap but they are worth it.
 
I have a Racor on the polishing system but I just cannot get room in the engine room for the primary - and I fancy with the vacuum gauge. Makes good sense for a precaution.
